We must also consider the impact of this increased population on our already stressed med- ical, social and education- al services and the con- comitant tax dollars required to service them. There is the cost of expanding sewage treat- ment facilities and the need for larger retail facil- ities that take away from local retail facilities. Unlike urban communi- ties, our public transpor- tation needs are very dif- ferent. Public transit is virtually * non-existent here. This has significant impact on our accessibili- ty to employment, day care, post-secondary edu- cation, and specialized medical services. Being part of a geopolitical area that shares this common concern will give us great- er potential to create a solution that meets our specific needs. If we are serious about addressing environmen- tal challenges and the effects on our health, we need to create a geopoliti- cal structure that'reflects our environmental sup- port system. This means the watershed on which we, as living beings, phys- ically depend. Ninety-five per cent of Brock Township and 81 per cefit of Uxbridge Township are in the Lake Simcoe watershed, and 80 per cent of Scugog Township is in the Kawartha watershed area. It is natu- ral for Brock and Uxbridge to affiliate with Simcoe County and for Scugog to affiliate with Victoria County. The sooner our geopoli- tical boundaries align with our bioregional boundaries, the sooner we will be on the road to establishing fully integrated, sustainable communities. This means communities that are socially, economically, environmentally and spir- itually healthy, and who "plan for seven generations." I urge citizens, youth through to senior adults, in all communities com- prising North Durham to consider this idea. Let your thoughts be known to your municipal coun- cilors and your MPPs. I would appreciate hearing from people who are attracted to this idea and to receive copies of any correspondence you send to government officials. As well, I would be will- ing to coordinate a citi- zen's meeting to discuss, develop and expand this idea into a workable stra- tegy of action. Correspondence can be mailed to R.R. 4, 'Uxbridge, Ontario, LIP 1R4. I can be contacted by telephone at 905-852- 0406 or by fax at 905-852- 0409. It's time to get involved. Our future is at stake.
