PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 19, 1996 -13 "It's smart to use proper products Time to give your car a spring cleaning Ah Spring! The birds are singing, the trees are bud- ding. But your car doesn't look too thrilled. It's been a long, dirty winter, although nothing a good spring cleaning can't fix. The question is: where to begin and with what. Car Care Council of the Automotive Industries Association of Canada warns that the wrong cleaners can do more harm than good. Let's begin with the exte- rior. For years the cleaner of choice by many of us has been dishwashing liquid or other household deter- gents, which is handy and relatively inexpensive. The experts tell us, howev- er, that these products often are far too con- centrated. On newer cars, . they emphasize, the clear- coat finish can be dulled with improper washing. Most manufacturers of car cleaning products now off- er special products for washing, cleaning and pro- tecting the vehicle exterior with the new type finishes. The wrong cleaner or wax can dull the clear-coat finish. Along with winter muck, tires and wheels also get covered with brake dust. This black dust, prevalent with the new non-asbestos disc brake pads, can be dif- ficult to wash away, accord- ing to the Council. New products made specifically for wheel and tire cleaning, speed the clean-up process without damaging the bright finish on wheels. If it seems there's a speci- A new set of tires gives car a new lease on life Have you ever noticed how different your favour- ite shoes feel with new soles and heels? The wear was so gradual you had not realized how worn they'd become. Now you're walk- ing straight again. This is similar to the - improvement in the feel of your car when you replace worn tires. You had become accustomed to the vibrations and noise of the old ones. Then, with the new rubber on the road, the car seems to glide. The old tires may have aged prematurely and developed lumpy, flat spots because if incorrect align- ment of imbalance. Or they may have been under- inflated tires, says Car Care Canada of the Automotive Industries Association of Canada, a condition which wastes gas as well as accelerating tread wear. One out of four cars checked in an inspection lane, sponsored by Car Care Canada, had wheels out of alignment. How do you know if you wheels need aligning? Your first clue may come from erratic steering. The car may wander or pull from one side to the other. The condition may cause a shimmy similar to the action of an out-of balance tire. This is known as the shopping cart syndrome. The pulling to one side or the other also may be caused by a tire on one side being underinflated. Another clue; If your tires appear to be worn more at the outer edges than at the centre, or vice versa, your problem may be nothing more than incorrect inflation. But tires worn more on one side than the other or otherwise unevenly worn, probably are suffering from misalignment. The trained eye of an auto technician usually can differentiate between inflation, alignment and balance problems. Any one of 'the three should be corrected with- out delay, as some damage is already done by the time the symptoms are noticeable. As a preventative meas- ure, it's wise to have align- ment and balance checked twice a year. And you cer- tainly want to be sure the wheel alignment is O.K. before installing your expensive new tires. Even the vinyl top is at risk if you apply the wrong product. Many owners make the mistake of using interior cleaners on the vinyl top. Although this mistake is not irrevocable, applying the right products the first time will save elbow grease, money and possibly, your top. Like the outside of your car, there are certain mate- rials that are specifically recommended for the interior. For example, you want a vinyl upholstery cleaner that not only cleans but also protects the material from cracking. And you may need fabric and carpet cleaners designed to attack the spe- cific stains in your car. There are two basic types of stains: protein and oil/grease. Protein stains demand an enzyme pre- treatment, while the oil/grease type can be removed with heavy-duty shampoo containing de- greasing agents. Be sure to give these chemicals time to work and remem- ber always to work a stain from the outside in. Floor mats can be cleaned in the same way, finishing with a good shampoo. Windows are pretty much dessert when it comes to spring cleaning your car. Still, the Council does offer a couple of hints. First, use your favourite commercial glass cleaner.' If smudges and road film persists, try rubbing alco- hol to cut through to the shine, don't get any on the paint. And remember to clean all glass on the inside as well as outside.
