Everything we felt, it was all right." Jaclyn, who had been waiting nearby, joined them. They spent five hours together before parting, promising only to keep in touch. John and Rhonda say now they don't expect Kevin to come to regard them as mother and father. He's been raised for years by the people who adopted him at birth, and nothing can replace that. "We're not trying to steal him from them," said John, "we're just looking for a friendship." "We've got so much we have to say, so much to share," added Rhonda. "The hardest thing was to meet him, and say goodbye." Now John and Rhonda Pottery want to help make a dif- ference. They vow to use their experience to help others who are searching for long-lost parents and children, and to lobby the provincial government for changes to legisla- tion that will make disclosure of information legal. They know first-hand the frustration of dealing with a system which, by law, conceals from adoptees and birth parents information that would answer so many ques- tions and, in some cases, bring about reunions that are yearned for by the parties involved. "If you haven't been through it, you just don't under- stand," said John. "The doors are closed to you every- where you go." Rhonda agrees that the years fe been tough to endure. "This is something that's affected over half my life already. It's something that will be with me until I die. I want to help people with this now. "You know what's really hurt over the years? Standing back and watching things, day-to-day life, and wonder- ing, if Kevin was here, would it be different?" As for their future with Kevin, they will take it slowly, and let the relationship develop as naturally as possible, she added. "We're not trying to make up for lost time. We're look- ing for a beginning."
