PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 19, 1996 - 21 Whitby Auto Wreckers in Tournament Our first game was against Bowmanville and they started the scoring at 7:18, and at 6:52. Whitby fought back with a goal from Justin Sanders assisted by Gary Garrett. Jordan Froats tied the game 2-2 when he went in alone and shot high at 4:43. Bowmanville picked up the lead getting the only goal of the second. Ryan May tied it 3-3 assisted by Greg Jeffrey. A hard fought last four minutes as both teams played great hockey trying to gain the lead. Bowmanville scored to go up 4-3 and put in another 19 seconds later to win the game 5-3. Goalie Kellen Jackson made some good saves and the boys went onto the B side to take on Newmarket. This game we dominated. Ryan May was the lone scorer in the first, unassisted. End to end hockey in the second had both goalies making nice moves. Whitby went up 2-0 on a shot from Justin Sanders assisted by Ty Armstrong. Another from Greg Jeffrey with assists to Gary Garrett and Joel Campbell to end the second. Newmarket fought hard in the third to get on the board but to no avail. Whitby scored with 46 seconds left as Jordan Froats took a pass from Jamie Anderson and went in alone, Ryan May finished off the scoring, unassisted to end the game 5-0. Jackson got the shutout . The consolation final was against the Lions Club. Scoring was back and forth throughout the game. The Lions Ryan O'Leary scored first followed by teammate Joseph Koslinsky. Whitby got on the board late in the first as Jordan Froats picked the top corner, assisted § X by Joel Campbell. Joseph Koslinsky made it 3-1 to start the second. Ryan May added two more to tie the score. Lions Ryan O'Leary got the go ahead goal. It was 4-3. Both teams battled for the puck in the third. Justin Sanders tied the game with three minutes left. Greg Jeffrey and Ryan May picked up assists. At 1:10 Scott Symes passed the puck to Jordan who let go a beautiful shot to win the game. Way to go team. A great effort from the Lions Club. Congratulations to Joseph Koslinsky and Justin Sanders for receiving MVP trophies. IGA Bantam Tournament IGA met Whitby for the first game in the Port tournament. Whitby got on the board early at 9:30. The boys fought back and Murphy Irvine and Jeremy Pare set up a great play to score with 40 seconds left. Whitby took the lead when they scored on two penalty shots in the second. Another goal for Whitby left the score 4-1 going into the third. Jeremy scored his second goal at assisted by Reid McTaggert and Jon Sanders but Whitby got the remaining three goals to end the game 7-2. We went onto our next game against Swamp Garage. Swamp was determined and came out with three goals in the first period; two from Blayne Kinnunen and one from John Reed assisted by Mike Egley. In the second IGA battled back, Murphy Irvine scored assisted by Joel Van Camp and Jon Sanders. Jeremy Pare unassisted put one in with two seconds left to end this period 3-2. Swamp's Derek Campbell picked up a shorthanded goal, the only goal in the third. Swamp won 4-2 and went to the consolation. Lawrence Cook worked hard on IGA defence and was awarded MVP. Nice to see Nick Ostafichuk's Gramma from Vancouver to watch him play. Missed Captain Chad Lance out with a broken collar bone and Kam Cooper who was away. Good luck in the playoffs. Swamp Garage Bantams Swamp took part in the Picton and District Tournament, a huge house league tourney, taking place in arenas in Picton, Wellington, Deseronto and Belleville. The first day saw the team with one win, one loss and one tie. Tuesday morning, in the quarter-finals, Port defeated Peterborough St. Annes 2-1. In the semi-final, Kingston Queen St. was defeated 5-0 by Swampers. In the final we met a Kingston team, edging them 2-1 for the championship. Team members: Todd (Toad) Mitchell, Aleisha Cracknell, Blayne Kinnunen, Chris Orr, Keith Hancock, Jeremy Hall, Jarred Aldridge, John Reed, Deryk (Campby) Campbell, David Bonsier, Eric (Wildcat) Wygert, Mike Egley, No. 1 draft pick, Justin (the Cat) Sheehey. Hustler of the Game Awards: David Bonsier, Blayne Kinnunen and John Reed. Coaches Wayne Hancock, Rick Campbell and No. 3 were pleased with the team effort. If only we'd tried Cherry Blasters a little earlier in the season! Congratulations ! Re/Max Novice Tournaments | It has been a busy week for Re/Max. We participated in two tournaments, one in Millbrook and one in Port. We ended the week with our final regular season game. In Millbrook, it was an exciting day for the kids and parents, the team worked hard all day playing three games and reaching the "A" championship game. The first game the team played Pickering. The score went back and forth several times resulting in a hard earned 7-6 win. Leading the way for Re/Max were David Stewart, three goals, three assists, Brent Meeking and Norman Rooney each scoring two and adding an assist, assists also went to Kirk Stephens, two, James Hobbs and The second game was tough, our opponents being the Oakville Devils. This team was strong, but our kids were not to be denied, they worked hard, played with grit, showed great determination and team character. Trevor Algar played well in goal. Scoring was David Stewart, four goals, one assist, Norman Rooney one goal, one assist, Brent Meeking three assists, Kirk Stephens two assists. Other assists went to Tim Gibson, Ian Page, and James Hobbs. Final score 5-4 putting us in the championship Congratulations to MVP Norman Rooney. The final game was a thriller. Our opponents were the home Millbrook #1 squad. Re/Max held on to a 2-0 lead midway through when Millbrook got a break, closing the gap to one. Millbrook didn't look back, scoring their next three in succession. The score was 4-2 in favor of Millbrook with three minutes left when Re/Max closed the gap to one, only to set the stage for the final three minutes. With our goalie out, we did everything but put in the equalizer. Re/Max was on the short end losing 4-3. The coaches couldn't be prouder of the kids, they showed great determination, character, and above all class, they represented Port Perry well. Leading the way for Re/Max were David Stewart, two goals and one assist, Brent Meeking, one goal. Assists went to James Hobbs, Kyle Bowers, Ceri Boomsma, and Kirk Stephens, Defensively we got strong performances from Josh Page, Andrew Adams, Haydon Fish, Stewart Medford, and Tyler Leach. Goaltender Trevor Algar played a strong game, keeping the game close, and our congratulations to Trevor for being selected MVP. Re/Max Home Tournament March 14 was another great day for the Re/Max team as we were at home for the Port Perry tournament. Our first game was an exciting game going into sudden death overtime. Goaltending was solid with Trevor Algar coming up big. At the end of regulation the score was 3-3. Scoring for Re/Max were David Stewart, Norman Rooney and Brent Meeking. Assists went to Josh McCabe and Darren Tapper. In overtime we were down to two on Darren Tapper. In overtime we were down to two on two with the goaltender in when David Stewart took a pass from Norman Rooney and broke in alone and beat the goalie to end it. With this win we moved into the "A" pool and our next opponent was from Oshawa. In the second game the team learned a valuable lesson, never to give up. We had a good lead only to lose 6-4 eliminating us from further play. Scoring were Norman Rooney, Brent Meeking and David Stewart- with two. Congratulations to Brent Meeking for receiving the "Best Effort" award in the tournament. Re/Max and Van Camp play tough March 16 was the final regular season game. With the playoffs around the corner both teams, Re/Max and Van Camp were doing some fine tuning. The game ended 6-0 in favor of Re/Max. Scoring for Re/Max were David Stewart, two, James Hobbs, Josh Page, Brent Meeking and Norman Rooney added singles. Assists went to Andrew Adams, David Stewart, Norman Rooney, James Hobbs, Brent Meeking, Tyler Leach and Ian Page. Stewart Medford played a strong game earning the shutout. Defensive standouts were Darren Tapper, Kyle Bowers, Josh McCabe, Tim Gibson and Haydon Fish. Van Camp standouts were Darren Black, Kale Thompson, Cameron O'Conner, Patrick Dunn, Chase James, Rob and Michael Waller, and goaltender Brett Whyte. Peewee House League Emiel's enjoyed a successful Uxbridge Tournament. Our first game against Uxbridge Luna's proved to be our first stop to the championship winning 5-,2 using good team effort. Chris Gloster led the pack with two goals and an assist. Tyler Lucas, David Halward and Gerrard Timmers scored a goal and assist each. Assists were also awarded to Sean Williams, Cameron MacDonald and Brian Gaudet. Our second match up was with Currahdale Farms and we came out ahead 5-1. More great plays by the entire team kept our top scorers hot! Gerrard Timmers scored twice, with two assists. Chris Gloster and Mike Blakey also scored a goal and assist each. Proving that a great team effort was made by all, assists were awarded to Mark Richardson, Tyler Lucas, David Halward, Joshua Griffin, Mike Sytsma and Kevin Moore. We then moved onto the Championship game against a strong Uxbridge Canadian Tire Team. We went into the game strong and kept up the pressure to win the tourney 4-2. Sean Williams scored two great goals. Mike Blakey and Tyler Lucas also managed a goal each. Assists went to David Halward, Chris Gloster and Mark Richardson, two. Very special mention to goalie Shawn Martin who kept us in all of the games by making incredible saves and giving the rest of the team motivation to succeed. Great coaching by Harvey Williams and Dan Martin was also a big reason for the success. Congratulations to all of Emiel's team members on winning the Uxbri dge tournament. Emiel's would also like to congratulate our Big V team on winning the consolation at the tournament. SPORTS Action from SHL From Page 20 the Fitzgerald Clippers 3- 0. Carl Durward was as- sisted by Dave Dickson and Brad Menzies in the first goal. Then Dave Dick- son scored two more goals; Rick Olaisen, Doug Bache, and Wayne Fox assisted Dave in his goals. Chargers vs Senators Finally, the Monsma Chargers defeated the Ball-Callery Senators 3-1. The Chargers claimed the first two goals, the first shot by Rick Sheehey, and assisted by Lee Wilbur and John Robertson, and the second goal was shot by Mike Geer with assists from Brian Pomeroy and Steve Fox. In the third pe- riod he Senators finally scored by a shot from mark Decosta and assist- ed by Ken Jeffrey and Rob Evans. The final goal was scored by John Robertson and assisted by Brian Po- meroy and Mike Geer.
