10- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 2, 1996 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Yuk Yuks will be in Nestleton this Saturday night Don't forget the Firefighter Yuk Yuk night this coming Saturday at Nestleton Hall at 8 p.m. You'll have fun and lots of laughter. My best wishes to you, one and all for a happy family gath- ering during this coming Easter weekend. Last Thursday, March 28, Eileen and I attended the Lake Scugog Historical Society meet- ing at the Old Town Hall. The ~ minutes of the Feb. 21 meeting were accepted as printed. A discussion of the harmony between the Museum Board and the Historical Society was mentioned. Ron Brown showed an excellent film on ghost rail- ways of Ontario. Yes, the Port Perry Station was included. The Society's Coming Events Thursday, April 18 at 7:30 p.m. at the Head Church Museum Ground. Talks on gar- dens of history. Peggy Clark. Durham chapter Canadian Organic Growers. "Mavis Brodie and Susan Caesarea Albert Putsey Dutton on our Museum Gardeners. June 3, Nonquon Canoe race known as the longest running canoe race in Ontario. The loca- tion of the race may be changed. This is to be discussed at a later meeting. It is my opinion that these abandoned rail lines should be preserved for future rapid tran- sit rail lines and planning should be incorporated 1n future enlargement growth of Metro Toronto, based on these lines. We saw the line running to the Scarborough Town Centre lost because of lack of planning. We had a great feast at the Rec Centre in Blackstock Saturday night thanks to par- ents, teachers and students of Cartwright High School. Also special thanks to all these peo- ple and businesses who donated gifts that were used in the lucky draws and private auc- tion. We were kept busy most of the evening checking num- bers, and etc. The funds raised are to send the senior band to Washington, D.C. to compete in a band competition in May. Thanks to you all for a won- derful evening. ' ESCORT IOVE iT ALL-... An additional 25,000 square feet could also be constructed on this site in the future. A proposal is also before council for the former Ger- ry's Produce lands on Highway 7A. Frank Cele- bre is looking to start up 60,000 square feet of com- mercial business. A recent proposal from Bill Tripp included some 25,000 square feet of com- mercial space for the Prince Albert Neighbor- hood Plan area. This latest proposal had Regional Councillor Marilyn Pearce suggesting a commercial study be completed on Port Perry. A study was done in 1992 and it was indicated at that time that 95,000 square feet of retail could be provided without ad- versely affecting the downtown stores. The pro- posals before council ex- ceed this level signifcant- ly. Mr. Dyment has sug- gested council have a re- view of the commercial de- velopment in the Port Perry urban area in terms of the size and commercial uses. The current Official Plan only deals with the Main Central Area and Special Commercial Uses. With the introduction of the concepts of conven- ience commerical and neighborhood commercial in the Prince Albert area, Mr. Dyment said these concepts should be re- viewd with the entire ur- ban area with specific tar- gets and limits for development.
