18- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 2, 1996 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" » " "Your Local Agricultural \'(0) (Wl Published by the Port Perry Star April 2, 1996 EFP program gets top marks from farmers in Ontario study One year after it was initi- ated, Ontario farmers have given the province's Environmental Farm Plan Program top marks. The Environmental Farm _ Plan process promoted the development of Environmental Farm Plans (EFPs) - docu- ments prepared by Ontario farm families to raise their environmental awareness about their own farms. The program, started by the Ontario Farm Environmental Coalition, was launched last January to assist farmers in identifying their own environ- mental strengths, areas of con- cern and to set goals for improvement. So far, the EFP process seems to have worked. 95 per cent participation A survey by the Ontario Farm Environmental Coalition revealed that over 95 per cent of the 2,500 farmers who to date, have participated in the EFP program say it was worth- while and they would recom- mend the process to their neighbors. And, an overwhelm- ing majority reported that most of their farm practices did not pose a risk to the environment. Information gathered will help farmers and farm organi- zations set priorities for future government assistance, and assist with development pro- grams related to farm environ- mental issues. In addition to helping Ontario farmers identify prac- tical and economical solutions to any existing environmental problems on their farms, the EFP Incentive Program also provides $500 to them for implementing positive envi- ronment changes cited in their EFP Action Plan. The survey also showed that Ontario farmers found the EFP process useful in making them more aware of methods for implementing environmental improvements to their farms. To encourage more partici- pants in the EFP process, the Ontario Farm Environmental Coalition will recognize 12 environmentally conscious farmers in Ontario every year. The contest, valued at $1,000 per winning entry, will select entries based on individual farmers' ingenuity and exper- tise in overcoming environ- "mental challenges on their farm. Entries displayed In turn, these winning entries will be displayed at major Ontario farm shows and agricultural events. The public will then decide which entry merits the annual Farmers' Choice Award. The Ontario Farm Environmental Coalition con- sists of the Ontario Federation of Agriculture, the Christian Farmers Federation of Ontario, AGCare and the Ontario Farm Animal Council. Technical sup- port is provided by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. ~ Funding for the EFP pro- gram is provided by the Canada-Ontario Green Plan through Agriculture and Agri- Food Canada.
