Editorial Comment Another blow to integrity Canadians across the continent are shaking their heads in disgust over the admission last week by federal Finance Minister Paul Martin that it was a "mistake" to give us the impression the Liberal government was going to do something about the hated GST. We have every right to be disgusted. And we would be correct if we all chose a moment sometime this week to stand together, all Canadians, and shout in the direction of Deputy-Prime Minister Sheila Copps: "Resign!" : The Liberals will tell you they never promised to scrap the GST... with the exception of Sheila Copps, that is. They'll point to their Red Book, which said a Liberal government would "replace" the tax with a system that is more fair, but generates the same revenue. But Canadains who handed the Grits their majority a couple of years ago didn't do so after careful perusal of campaign literature. They did so after listening to candidates from various echelons of the party give us the impression that once they were elected, the GST would be a thing of the past, and we could look for goods and services without the burden of the GST factoring into the decision to buy legitimately, or resort to the black market. Integrity is up for sale, and it's going cheap. That's without the PST and GST, or some harmonized mixture of the two, of course. It's a shameful blemish on the Liberal record. And it needn't be. There was no need to mislead Canadians with regard to the GST, a promise to look at reasonable alternatives would have sufficed. But the Liberals --led by Ms Copps -- went the whole nine yards, and now find themselves on the receiving end of our scorn. They deserve it. We are completely forgetting homes for the most important and most needy - our young families. The young family is the only hope we have to survive in the future. Scugog Township - with its millions of dollars in reserve - must start thinking of how to help our coming generation. The present exploita- PHOTO COURTESY OF JOYCE FULLER all incentive is lost.
