8- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 30, 1996 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Work out and help Foundation 'Aerobathon' will get your pulse pumping, raise funds By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star All residents are invited to take part in Scugog's first Aerobathon, with proceeds going to the Heart and Stroke Founda- tion. Michele Valentino, who teaches aerobics in Port Perry, is holding the event not only as a fundraiser for the foundation, but as a way to educate people about the importance of staying fit. Ms! Valentino, who lost her father after a three year stuggle from a mas- sive stroke, said that is her motivation for putting on this event. During that three years her family relied on the foundation and medical research that was happen- ing because of fundrais- ers. She said now she wants to put something back into the system. "If what I am doing helps in any small way it's important," she said. Teaching aerobics actu- ally came as a result of her father's death, saying she wanted to do something to educate people about healthy lifestyles and to try to prevent the illness from happening to some- one else. Men and women, aged 14 and older, are encour- aged to round up sponsors and take part in the aero- bathon at Scugog Centre on June 3 from 1-4 p.m. A minimum of $10 in dona- tions per person 1s re- quired to take part. The event will feature three sets of 45 minute aerobic sessions, with 15 minute breaks in between for line dancing demon- strations. The Port Perry Outback Cloggers will also be performing at the beginning ofthe event. The word Aerobathon may scare off a few partici- pants, but Ms. Valentino stresses it will be a very low impact, easy session, and people can take part e Executive Lifestyle ¢ 277 Cochrane Street ¢ Port Perry Completely renovated in 1991 2,650 (plus) sq. ft. * Large eat-in Kitchen with adjoining play area * Main Floor Family Room with walkout e * Separate Dining and Office/Study rooms ° * 3 (plus) Bedrooms ¢ * Large Master Bedroom with Ensuite ° and year-round view of Lake Scugog $359,000. * Finished 2 1/2 car garage ° Quality Living In A Prestigious Area If you think you might fit into this picture Call Roger Watson (905) 985-9447 Detailed packages outlining the features and qualities of this home available to 2 interested parties. Half of respondents call for smoking ban Well over half of Durham residents responding to a recent survey would support-a by-law making en- closed public places 100 per cent smoke free, said Evelyn Butler, Director of Public Health Nursing for the Health Department, last week. Four hundred residents living in Pickering were part of a larger survey of residents of the Greater To- ronto Area (GTA) in which survey participants gave health risks associated with smoking and second hand smoke as reason for their support. According to the GTA survey, operators of estab- lishments that primarily serve food, such as restau- rants or food courts, may even see an increase in pat- ronage because of strong by-laws protecting non- smokers. Survey participants (52 per cent) agreed with the statement that making restaurants smoke freeis not a threat to the hospitality industry. There is growing evidence that second hand smoke 1s a serious health risk for non-smokers, particularly children. Children's lungs are not as well developed as adults' lungs and children breathe faster. Lung growth can be affected, and children exposed to sec- ond hand smoke get many more colds, ear infections "Anything a community can do to protect its resi- dents, especially children, from the hazards of smok- ing is good business for operators of public places," said Ms. Butler.
