"A Family Tradition for 130 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, May 14, 1996 -5 Sates climbed steadily this spring Real estate agents see | hope in early 96 figures By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star Real estate agents in Durham are looking ahead with optimism after a slight boom in the mar- ket during the first three months of the year. Statistics showed the number of sales in the re- gion increasing signifi- cantly month to month in the first quarter of 1996, the Durham Region Real Estate Board has report- ed. "While our home prices are not soaring, the num- ber of sales reported cer- tainly has," said board president Dean West. He said the sales activity here could be indicative of an ongoing economic recov- ery, but couched any pre- dictions with caution: "It will take a few more months before we will be able to confidently say a real estate recovery is sus- tainable." Mr. West points to two factors in the upswing: Lower interest rates that make now a good time to buy, and a "pent-up" con- sumer population who have decided to make a move after waiting months and years to buy and sell. There is time, and then take the leap. "In certain segments of society there is optimism, and there is job security." Add to that favorable in- terest rates and lower list- ings, and the climate is right, said Mr. West: "The opportunity is there, so they're takingit." The board's numbers showed a steady increase in sales from January to March, with homes sell- ing, on average, for 96 per cent of their list price. Sin- gle family detached homes accounted for 478 of the 719 homes sold during March. Sales are typically high- er during the spring months, from February to June. But even that busy season has fallen flat in times of high interest rates and uncertainty among consumers. ' Mr. West said there may be some hope in indicators such as real estate and. auto sales, the big-ticket items .that relate confi- dence and security.
