"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" J. PETER HVIDSTEN / PORT PERRY STA! OLD FASHIONED WAGON RIDE - Irwin and Alissa Smith prepare to give a group of visitors to Ocala Orchards Winery Farm a tour of the orchards last Sunday afternoon. More than 1,000 people visited the farm for Blossom Festival Weekend and enjoyed entertainment, wagon rides, winery tours and wine testing. By all accounts the event was a huge success, although due to the cool spring, the apple blossoms were not in full bloom. Representatives from Tourism Durham and the Durham Tourism Associa- tion met last week to ex- change ideas at Ocala Or- chards in Scugog. It was a way to pull all the partners in tourism to- gether to communicate and exchange brochures, said Patti Watson, co- ordinator of Tourism and Visitor Services for the re- gion. "It is the kick-off for our (tourism) season," she added. Tourism Durham, formed in 1995, is a re- NG APPOINTMENTS AVAILABLE } B DENTISTRY WHILE YOU SLEEP - GENERAL ANAESTHESIA AVAILABLE SALE gional association aimed at giving Durham Region a competitive edge and providing the best service in attracting tourists to the area. As co-ordinator Mrs. Watson consults with area tourism businesses and municipalities to learn of marketing pro- grams and how Tourism Durham can co-operate with current initiatives. The Tourist Association of Durham Region is a group of tourist oriented businesses acting to pro- mote, as a non-governing body, the tourist business in Durham and the reve- nues generated by such business. Tourism Durham sent out 90,000 Visitors Guides last year. Included in the brochure was a reader response card. Close to 200 cards were re- turned showing 37 per cent of the responses com- ing from the Greater To- ronto area, 30 per cent from Quebec and 30 per cent from Durham and the remainder spread across southern and central On- tario and Buffalo. Tourism Durham wants to continue co-ordinating marketing partnerships and programs to further enhance the tourism sec- tor within the Region. New programs will enable the region to keep abreast of the needs of travelers, as well as the trends that will enhance future mar- keting programs. It is the association's goal to continue to develop the tour market and to ex- plore the convention mar- ket. The Tourist Association of Durham Region will continue to consist of busi- ness people who have rec- ognized the opportunity to network with and brain- storm new ideas and new products that will en- hance business. The association will do as much as it can to en- courage both locals and visitors to experience what the region has to of- fer, according to president Ken Cavanagh. G.I.C.
