A panel of local judges - Karen Puckrin of the Scu- gog Youth Council, Mrs. Bernice Avis of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Linda Lowry from the School Board's drug awareness program, and an Uxbridge physician, Dr. Tom Stefopulos - re- viewed the student groups' presentations. Awards and cash prizes were presented to: 0 Port Perry High School - first a Uxbridge Secondary School - second a Cartwright High School and Brock High School - runners-up The judges expressed praise for the safety- awareness efforts of all the students involved. "In The Driver's Seat," originating in Etobicoke in 1992, was brought to the northern portion of Dur- ham Region by Communi- ty Injury Prevention, North Durham, a coalition of people and organiza- tions 'concerned with young driver's safety. Members of the coali- tion include local students and teachers, public health nurses, the Head Injury Association of Dur- ham Region, Young Driv- ers of Canada, the Addic- tion Research Foundation, State Farm Insurance and the Ministry of Trans- port's Road Safety Pro- gram.
