"A Family Tradition for 130 Years" "Lr » - ass 3 it: Chretien made the. right move To the Editor: Reading your criticism of Jean Chretien for having snubbed the' International AIDS conference leaves me amazed that anyone in your po- sition can be so out of touch with publicopinion. You may be certain that "Chretien read the public mood exactly. For far too long one government after another has capitulated to the every de- mand of radical AIDS activists, and despite all the money which has been spent, the rate of HIV infection continues to rise. The fact remains that AIDS is absolutely preventable but no- body in authority has had the guts to make this point. Given that health care budgets contin- ue to shrink, why a any more money and previous re- sources be wasted when the groups most vulnerable to infec- tion continue with their high risk behaviour? The AIDS activists I heard speak at the Internatiorial Con- ference were demanding new drugs and vaccines, not, I felt, for the good of mankind, but as a licence for their own lifestyles. There has been enough infor- mation in the press over the past 15 years to convince any reasonable person to avoid high risk behaviour. Anyone 4 hasn't yet rio the mes- sage is either illiterate, or just plain stupid. Isuggest, Mr. Mitchell, that if you want to vent your spleen at someone, you should take it out on the various governments and self-serving individuals who are trying to muzzle Mr. Justice Horace Krever, who is conducting the tainted blood in- quiry. If Re get their way most, if not all, of the wuoriu- nate innocent ple who tracted AIDS blood a blood products will be dead without seeing justice done. Chretien knows his electo- rate and realizes, even if you do not, that an election is ex within the next vear. His snub of the AIDS conference was carefully calculated and earned him untold Brownie points from voters of all political stripes. Yours faithfully, B.V. Gotham, RR}, Bowmanville. Beach complaints met with silence To the Editor: I cannot believe what I've been coming across. In going to Palmer Park beach lately with my children I've noticed with absolute dis- gust, the goose feces on the beach. In my opinion a simple solu- tion is to rake the St front each morning, a job that would take about half an hour. I feel this should be a priority job. The beach playground is a popular area for locals and tour- ists alike. We can't seem to find a solution to the goose problem, but can't we at least rake up the feces deposited on the rhe the previous night, so our children do not walk through it, sit in it orplay init? I called the Parks Depart- ment and left a detailed mes- sage, but got no response. I called the Health Department and was told to call the Works Department. I called the Works Department and spoke to Ad- ministrator Earl Cuddie, and was shocked by his aggressively ~ defensive attitude. He said there was no money, and it is not a priority. I talked to Mayor Hall and was told there was no money, and the beach was now shut down for swimming due to the E. Coli level, but he'd look intoit. I called Mayor Hall again lat- er to discuss the beach closure sign and will follow through to the Health Department to re- quest a closure sign on the actu- al beach, where swimmers/ parents can atleast seeit. But before the second call to Mayor Hall, I called the Parks Department to find out about the no swimming sign change and spoke to Tim, who got ag- J defensive about the goose feces. At that point some would have said I was causing this re- sponse, but I thought not and my husband non me that it was not my doing on this last call. What I do not understand is this attitude and lack of concern and priority for our children, not to mention the adults' safe' ty. It all trdly makes me wonder why I chose Y live in this town.
