The food at the bank has to last until the next big drive at Thanksgiving. Each of the 20-25 fami- lies that use the bank each week are "supplied with enough food for three meals for two to three days. Each box contains cereal, 'apple juice, spa- ghetti sauce, tuna, pork and beans, macaroni and cheese, fruit, vegetables, soup and peanut butter, along with tea, coffee, sug- ar and powdered milk when available. These are the items the bank is in desparate need of as well as other staple items. : Operation Scugog sup- plies meals to low income families in the township on either a regular or tem- porary basis. Volunteers say if each local shopper put one item in the drop off box the next time they do their grocery shopping it would go a long way to restocking the shelves. Drop off boxes for Oper- ation Scugog are available at both Port Perry IGA and Mike's Food Basics. Officials with the Kawartha Regi Conservation Authority are "thrilled and delight- ed" over news of a $75,000 grant from the province. The money is a pro- gram-related capital grant to be used by the ~ cash-strapped agency for maintenance and improvements at conser- vation areas within its jurisdiction. = The announcement was made by provincial Natural Resources minister Chris Hodgson last week. ; "We are thrilled and delighted," authorit chair Wayne Hutchir said after the announce- ment. He said the grant will bridge a funding gap that seemed insurmount- able earlier this year, when conservation agen- cies across the province were told by the Tories to expect huge funding cuts. But when word of pos- sible funding came along, staff at the authority -- at one point nearly all of them had been laid off because of the fundin crunch -- prepared a lis of projects, which was approved by the board. Works approved by the authority include: Qa major preventative maintenance to all con- servation areas; i a further trail develop- ment, - 0 improvements to the swimming area at Ken | Reid conservation area, as well as possible insta lation of playground equipment, and = a designation of funds for a flood forecasting sys- tem, as well as work on water quality in the Kawarthas.
