The provincial health rinistry is announcing sweeping changes to the way in which health care is delivered, and that means that every hospital in the province is being ex- amined for efficiency, said Mr. Taylor. "We knew we had to change, and we wanted to do it before somebody changed us." Discussions among the two communities have been painstaking and, at times, tense, he admitted: "Both hospitals would like to have remained the same; there's no question. "And no communi wants to give up heal services." But the writing is on the wall. Deep funding cuts have resulted in curtailed services at both hospitals, and already some changes have taken place. For in- stance, Cottage Hospital announced a few months ago that obstetrics would no longer be a focus there; that's in recognition of de- clining births at the Ux- bridge hospital, and in- creasing use of Port's New Life Centre. It is emergency services that will probably be the matter of most concern for people in both: communi- ties, though. This spring boards at both hospitals were relieved to learn that provincial funding to al- low both to provide 24- hour emergency care is forthcoming: How that works out in the future re- mains to be seen. Mr. Taylor said the divi- sion of services will L. the top priority of the naw combined board, which ought to be in place at the end of June, 1997, when the fiscal year for both hos- pitalsends.
