This weekend marked the finish of another Cartwright Minor Ball season. With the fair coming all fastball divisions have completed play. Two baseball teams are in post season play as part of the Clarington Baseball Association. On Saturday both the Mite and Senior tournament winners were declared. Mite winners were Port Perry IGA Expos while the senior crown went to Don Frew & Dons Aggies. Mite Tournament IGA won the Mite title edging Turner's Green Giants 11-8. The Expos won in the minimum three games while Turner's reached the final through the B side playing a total of five games. The final turned out to be a schedulers dream as the No. 1 and No. 2 teams battled it out for the championship. Turners had beat IGA twice in regular season play with both wins by a single run so the expectations were high for a close exciting game. And that turned out to be true. Turner's took an early 2-0 lead after two as Ashley Lucas hit an off field double and scored on two passed balls while Brandon Hoskin did likewise after hitting a single. IGA got their initial runs in the third on a two out rally as Brad Pigden and Gage Billings scored after two walks and a key single by T. J. Parker. From here on the Expos got confidence and IGA pitcher Shawn McNamara and the rest of the infield totally shut down Turner's offense with back to back three up three down innings. IGA continued their pursuit scoring five runs in the fifth as T.J. Parker hit a triple to score two while the single by Katie Ferguson scored one more. Ashley Lucas and Brandon Hoskin scored for Turner's in the fifth after both had hit singles and scored on erratic throwing by the Expos. The winners scored their final two in the sixth as Shawn McNamara singled and scored on TJ. Parker's single who scored on a passed ball. IGA pitcher Brandon Jordan held Turners to just one run in the sixth and that was a triple by Donnie Ellis who came into score on a passed ball. This gave the Expos a 11-5 lead after six. Turner's weren't done as they shut down IGA in their open inning. IGA got a leadoff out but a walk, 18- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, August 20, 1996 two singles and a passed ball scored three to make the score 11-8. However, clean up hitter Ashley Lucas grounded out to first and Brandon Hoskin did likewise to end the game to give the Expos the Mite tournament championship. : This was a well played game with both teams providing exciting moments. To top it off the game went seven innings in 1-1/2 hours and perhaps the most important issue of the day was the title was decided by the players and no one else. Congratulations to both teams for a fine display of fastball showing that when sportsmanship, competitiveness, fair play and team work come together that CMB is a site to enjoy for parents, fans, coaches and the most important people, the players . IGA started the tournament defeating the Saints 21-8 scoring the maximum six runs in three of the five innings. Offensively all the team contributed with each IGA player scoring at least one each while collecting 14 walks. Shawn McNamara had-four hits and scored three while Chase James and Katie Ferguson had two hits while scoring two each. The Saints received good offensive games from Mark Carnaghan who had two hits and scored a run while Corey Hellingman had a double and scored a runas well. Lishman Fur Traders came to play and a six run fourth ended up pushing IGA into the final. Lishman's took an early 6-2 lead scoring six in the second behind five singles with Nicky Jones getting the key RBIs of the inning. From there the Expos took over scoring the maximum six runs in each of the next two. Shawn McNamara continued to turn his game up a notch collecting two triples and four RBIs while TJ. Parker had three RBIs from two hits and Connor Cobitz and Brandon Jordan chipped in with a double each. . Mitch Truax hit a homerun for two runs as Lishman's fought back and scored six more to make it 14-12 in IGA's favor. Sean McKenna and James Hobbs had two hits apiece with Hobbs scoring two as did Kayla Evans. Lishmans used callup Steven Larmer and he showed by his strong fielding and batting he isready for Mites. They join the Giants and Storm as the 'teams that won the league title as well as their respective tournaments. « _ : Asin the Mite division the Frew crew won in the minimum three games defeating the Welding Rods Steelers 22-7 in the final game. 5 Another total team effort carried Frew to their win as the team collectively had 30 hits. Matt Flynn and Aaron Gimblett each had two triples while Brandi Brooks, Aaron Gimblett, Jamie Budge and Troy Mappin all had perfect games at the plate combining 4 for 19 of 30 hits. i Defensively the highlight was a three way relay between Darryl Keeler, Aaron Gimblett and ca * Troy Mappin to get a nice tag out at home plate. Ot] strong fielding games were turned in by Andrew Marsh and Elisha James. oi Ryan Prescott led the Steelers with a round tripper while Emma Marshall and Ashley Sauder each had two hits. Welding Rods received fine performances from Michelle Asselstine at second, Steven Paradis and Cameron Vernest at first base. 3 Frew won their opener narrowly edging their season long rivals the Campbell Electric Raiders in anextrainning. This game was a total team effort as the winners collected 31 hits while displaying some great defensive abilities to make some fine put outs. Matt Flynn hit for the cycle while Elisha James had four hits including two triples.
