12- PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, October 16, 1996 Cartwright J By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star A country-wide call has been issued to everybody who has attended tiny Cartwright High school in its 75 years of existence in an attempt to establish a new scholarship for grads. The effort, undertaken by the School Community Council (SCC) with the help of student volun- teers, is being mounted as a massive mail campaign right now. It's hoped enough former students of the small Blackstock school will respond so that an ongoing fund can be es- tablished, said organizer Ellen Martyn. "Our goal is to locate as many students as we can," she said Friday, during an interview at the school. Mrs. Martyn -- who's not a former student of CHS but whose husband, Ron, is a grad -- said that while efforts to contact former students have been made in the past, "It's never been done, to our knowl- edge, to this extent." Literally every stu- dent's name since the in- ception of CHS in 1922 -- the bujlding on Old Scu- gog Rdwas builtin 1925 has been dug up with the help of old year books and student registers. Volun- teers, each assigned names from a period in the school's long past, have been working at finding mailing addresses, to which appeals for contri- butions to the scholarship are being sent. "It's been quite a pro- cess," said Mrs. Martyn. "Going through this pro- cess, it's quite phenome- nal, the number of people who have stayed in this section of the province." Organizers of the alum- ni scholarship are hoping to raise $8,000 every two years. That would mean $2,000 prizes would be awarded to each of the two students chosen for the scholarship each year. But the actual amount of the bursary depends on the level of donations the cam- paign brings about. * 3M Scotchguard * Broadloom * Upholstery Cleaning «Loose 985-8552 Rugs Forder-Parks | Insurance Brokers Inc. | 34 Water St., Port Perry, Ontario L9L1]J2 \[Peorsanat attention 2s att of | youn gemenal weeds. | 3558471 & PATIO Subject to change without notice DOORS ENERGY EFFICIENT WINDOWS REDUCE EERE Sales & Installation Doors - Windows - Trough - Additions - Solariums PORT PERRY « (905) 985-3333 LINDSAY « (705) 328-1402 « (705) 878-2023 Reach Industrial Park - Reg. "They will be students who have been active in the school and the commu- nity; we're looking for kids wha have gone a bit above and beyond." Nominees will be college or university-bound, and a need for financial support in pursuit of post- secondary studies will be a deciding factor as well. Mrs. Martyn admitted the value of the scholar- ship each year is "a real shot in the dark. It's a mat- ter of what the response is from the alumni." That said, the SCC is alse approaching local businesses in hopes of ob- taining donations. It's hoped the scholarship can be an ongoing, substantial prize for promising stu- dents. . And the huge data base of former students can be used in the near future, when CHS celebrates its 75th anniversary in the year 2000, said Mrs. Mar- tyn. If you'd like to contrib- ute, or want more informa- tion on the scholar- ship, you can call Cartwright High School at 986-4241. PRODUCTS OUR NEW OFFICE CATALOGUE HAS ARRIVED!
