Township threatens to ban snowmobiles Snowmobilers getting 'bad rap' By Jeff Mitchell The Port Perry Star Snowmobilers are getting a bad rap from township councillors, says one local enthusiast. Larry Davidson says in a letter to the editor of The Star this week that a threat to ban the operation of snowmobiles in Port Perry because of the antics of a few bad riders is an unreasonable way to deal with the problem. "Do not paint all of us with the same brush... let's deal with these few problem areas. Approach your .neighbor in a rational manner, and maybe the problems will be resolved by asking for some coop- eration and common sense when riding through your area to get to the designated trails or lake area," Mr. Davidson, a mem- ber of the Port Per.y Snowmobile Club, wrote. Scugog' Township councillors were debating the issue long before the snow fell this year. Raising the issue was Regional Councillor Marilyn Pearce, who has called for input from township staff on ways to deal with inconsiderate sled- ders. she said some residents in town are complaining of snowmobiles travelling streets late at night, as well as riders _ use sidewalks and lawns. Councillor Pearce has said that if a strategy isn't forthcoming, she'll call for a ban on operation of snowmobiles in Port. "If 1 don't see any suggestions from staff, then we don't have any other options this year," she said at a recent meeting. "We will be left to ban it, although I don't want to do it."
