A 10- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 3, 1996 Student builders back on the job: By Heather McCrae Special to the Star The sound of pounding # hammers and the din of buzzing power tools have been heard since early au- tumn as 13 senior stu- dents from Port Perry High School undertake to build a garage on the back of aJohn St. home. This is the second year for students participating in the school's Build A House project. After re- ceiving approval from the Durham Board of Educa- tion in the spring of '95, 14 students helped build a house on a lot across from the school on Rosa St. that fall. The 1,519 sq. ft. bunga- low was sold recently, and is now home to Don and Ann Adams. From start to finish, Mr. Adams watched the house take shape as the students and Laurie Heatlie, their Con- struction Technology teacher, finished the job last spring. "Serving You Since 1975" Another project for PPHS program The new owners are more than pleased with their new home. "It's great - they've done a really nice job," Mr. Ad- ams said. "The students, teachers and tradesmen should be really proud." Whenc Sam Chiusolo heard the school was look- ing for another construc- tion project, he contacted PPHS about a garage be- ing built on to the back of his home. While Mr. Chiu- solo pays for the materi- als, the labor is provided by the students, free of charge. : Work has been continu- ous since the foundation was dug. Now that the roof is on and shingled, the . next phase is to install the board and batten siding. "We've got until the end of the semester to finish the job," Mr. Heatlie said. With three weeks until Christmas and then one week before exams in Jan- uary, he guarantees the Job will be finished. Ofthe 13 students work- ing on the project, three came with experience. Jer- ry Mitchell, Shaun Mack- ay and Nick Dawkin were part of the work crew last year, and the latter two are the foremen for this fall's project. Shaun and Nick inter- viewed last week on site, feel the experience is an invaluable one. Partici- pants learn all about the different building materi- als and gain experience with several power tools, they said. Student work- ers also become familiar with a multitude of build- ing codes and safety regu- lations. This is the first time James Roche has worked on a project of this nature. "It's a great 'hands on" ex- perience," he said. Mrs. Chiusolo has only praise for the workmen' and their standards of work. Although the school didn't make a profit on the sale of the Rosa St. house, + things went well for a first time effort, Mr. Heatlie said. : "That home came with a lot of extras that don't come with a standard sub- division home," he said, describing oak cupboards in the kitchen, a gas fire- place, high efficiency fur- nace and heat recovery ventilator, to name a few. Although the® Durham Board has funds it can al- * lot to PPHS to purchase a new lot for the building and sale of another house, the school is hoping some- one will want the students to construct a new build- ing for them.
