_ LErtrrs Island ad is called inappropriate T6 the Editor: I am writing this letter in re- sponse to the ad published by Aldred's Corner, Scugog Island in the Weekend Star of Friday, Nov. 8 on page 7, regarding the issuance of a liquor licence to . the Great Blue Heron Charita- ble Casino and Bingo Hall (G.B.H.C.C.)on Scugog Island. As a resident of Scugog Island for the past 22 years, I am ap- palled at this ad. Mr. Aldred states a variety «of different points on why the G.B.H.C.C. shouldn't get a liquor licence. Out of all the reasons stated, none are of enough significance to not issue a licence. First of all, in reference to the public transit not servicing the site issue, there is no public transit in town either. Does this mean that all the bars in town should close too? Second, about who pays for the road maintenance: the Is- Police should follow up on tips + From Page6" that they were "just swamped" with other things and that they really had no time to pursue this situation. They could pos- sibly send the registered owner of the vehicle a letter of warn- ing. To me that was a joke, basically a slap on the wrist for doing something that easily could have ended in serious injury or death. I believe that if they had taken my information more seriously and acted upon it immediately instead of making excuses as to why they could not, perhaps the person respon- sible for the ridiculous act could have been stopped. I do not believe he was aware that I had his license number. I asked the officers if in fact they were aware of the number of children in our area who had either been seriously injured or even killed by motorists who had failed to obey the lights on a stopped school bus, to which neither officer really had any response. The only response they kept giving me resource...Lake Scugog: As sure as spring comes, the ice which covers the lake melts and that date is published in the Star's record of "ice out" dates which goes back to 1872. Random Jottings by J. Peter Hvidsten LIONS MAKE US LOOK FORWARD TO SPRING The Port Perry Lions Club have a come up with a novel fundrais- ing idea this winter, using the areas most prominent lard Road itself is not-a major highway. Therefore there will to be maintenance done. The northern part of the road on which the hall is located was re- surfaced six years ago; even without the hall there, it needs to be fixed because of the poor Job that was done in the first place. The third issue, about the 'sign being a major reason not to issue a licence, is just ridicu- lous. Promoting safety is not a downfall to anyone or any place. Fourth, if the G.B.H.C.C. should become a bar hangout, so what? I am sure that some patrons that visit the bars in town do live on the Island; this does not seem to be a problem with anyone. As for people los- ing at gambling and drinking, then deciding to drive causing unsafe conditions; does this mean that someone buying a lottery ticket and losing is more was that they were very busy ition I had. and could spare no time to deal with this situation, as they had other important situations to deal with. I had suggested that perhaps if they were to act now, meaning immediately to one of their fellow officers they may in fact be able to stop the motorist on Simcoe St. in Port Perry. They informed me that the motorist would have a great lead on them, but he would not have if they had per- haps used their radio to call this out now to some other offi-. cer who was perhaps "not quite so busy." I do of course realize and understand that these and other officers have a lot to do as far as their jobs are cons cerned, but I thought that polic- ing our community was part of it. I would like to believe that when a citizen brings in or calls in a complaint that it will be acted upon, but as for sending this person even a letter of warning, I would like to know where they will send it, as they did not even take the informa- I'm not sure why this idea hasn't been thought of before, but it's a great way for the Lions to raise some of the funds they need each year to pay for their many community projects. The town of Uxbridge has run a similar contest for years on Elgin Pond, where an old vehicle is placed on the ice each winter. The vehicle, equipped with a '© ics Anon timing device, records the exact time it plunges through the ice to the bottom of the pond, attached ; by a large chain to shore. In the spring, the vehicle an fh is pulled out and stored for the next year. a2 The Port Perry Lions are hoping to raise about $5,000 over the winter on the draw and are offering a $1,000 prize to the person who guesses the cor- rect date. If there's more than one correct entry, all those who picked that date will be eligible for a final draw for the winner. - Tickets are $2 each and are available at The Port Perry Star, Port Perry Feeds, Lake Scugog Lumber, Re/Max, IGA, Oppers Aluminum, Komputer Klinic : and Radio Shack. In a letter to the editor in this edition of the Port Perry Star, a writer complains about the number of local newspapers and flyers he receives. He writes, "I'm fed up with the needless waste being generated by the local newspapers," andis ~~ s critical of the duplication of advertising flyers carried prone to have an accident than someone that has just lost their job? re We cannot predict what peo- ple are going to be like; any thing can happen. ; Mr. Aldred stated that AA meetings were good because they are needed, but he also states that if a licence is issued it will be negative to the reserve and its people. This statement I find inappropriate. The last point I would like to make is about the AA (Alcohol- ymous) meetings at the band council's hall. Another child to lose his or her life for the motorists to obey the lights as well as for officers to take the time to pursue a complaint and possibly keep this person from repeating the same idiotic scenario again? I hope that this situation is never taken lightly again, not in our com- munity or anywhere else. I believe motorists need to be more responsible and respect- ful towards our laws and that the officers could be more respectful to all citizen com- plaints regardless of how "swamped" they may believe themselves to be. With regards to these gentlemen, instead of "officers in blue," I believe that you should be "officers in red™ with embarrassment for not taking a complaint of this nature more seriously and help- ing to make our community a safer place for our children to grow up in.
