In February regaine To the Editor: The Ontario Government is downsizing because the Tories say big government is not effec- tive, is costly and people need less governments, and they are creating a megacity. As the Ontario government downsizes, it is eliminating thousands of well-paying jobs with benefits. Now, as they create a megacity, the plan is Many of your readers will remember Edna (Gauld) Sheridan and the late Bob Sheridan who lived, went to school, and were married ' 1995, their son Bob risked his life to save an elderly woman from the frigid waters of the Seton Lake Canal, near the vil- lage of Lillooet, British Columbia. The woman had accidently slipped into the canal and was being carried downstream towards the opening of the nearby hydro-electric dam. A passing motorist, Bob, dove into the cold and swift flowing waters and swam approxi- mately 25 meters to where the floundering victim was caught on the chain of a log boom. He pulled her along the slippery boom, all the while fighting the current, and eventually the shore. To the Editor: What an amazin concert at Port School on Dec. 18. Considering the poor working conditions the staff and pupils Christmas erry High of the Music Department have to put up with, the level of excel- lence attained is outstanding. It is the profit that you can- not see because it is not the bottom line, it is service, it is quality of life, it is health, things that can be almost invis- ible and taken for granted by many Canadians. So whatever the real agenda is here - cost reduction, power, the need to shift the responsib- lity to someone else - I believe we will all suffer with a reduc- tion in the quality of communi- ty services we receive. This will include a decrease in the ~ quality of education received by our children. Joan Gates, Vice-President, OPSEU, Region 3 Scugog policies are disappointing To the Editor: I am writing to you regard- ing some very disappointing ideas that I have come across within Scugog Township. First of all, I heard snow- mobilers may not be allowed to drive their snowmobiles into Port Perry. This disturbs me because I drive my snowmobile into town to get gas and food at local establishments. * A large percentage of all From Page®6 ice douple from church dohated a truck load of firewood so'we could use less furnace oil, gifts for us, and a box of canned goods. Christmas Eve we had a glorious meal with many heartfelt prayers from each child for the generosity of the kind people of the commu- nity. We ate as we have not eaten in a very long time, and the leftovers alone will feed us for a week. : Christmas morning we had an exciting time opening gifts warmed by a cozy fire. The giving did not stop there. Friends I had known in the businesses in Port Perry rely on the business from snowmo- bilers. If the council of Scugog do not want our business, we can easily go elsewhere. I have also heard from local residents of Port Perry about how the council is trying to 'keep the town small and old- fashioned. I have never heard of one way streets and islands in the middle of the roads which cause problems for school bus drivers and snow plow opera- tors. Port Perry is not ready or these Tieonvenienees, ink the council of Scugog has wasted the taxpaygrs money on items that were not necessary as well as driving people out of Port Perry. So the next time the residents of Scugog get the chance to vote think about what the council is doing to your town. Her parents brought a carload of used but well cared-for toys and games they had had donat- ed to them to give to us, as well as generous boxes of groceries. Another anonymous lot was on my front step Friday, Dec. 28, including meat, frozen soup stock, good used puzzles and games and at least four huge boxes of nicely kept used Heartfelt thanks from Scugog mom clothes. . When I prayed so hard for help to provide for my children, I never in my wildest dreams thought so many people would step in to fill this need. I am truly humbled. My children and I cannot thank you enough, not only for the material things you have provided, but the emotional support, caring and love you have shown us. We are greatly blessed to have chosen to live in this com- munity. Thank you and may God bless you all.
