McClelland Port Perry Star A letter from an Oshawa lawyer suggesting "big shots"'and "well known personalities" can break local bylaws has prompted an angry response from Scugog Mayor Howard Hall and administrator Earl Cuddie. The statement in the letter is "completely uncalled for. I am offended by it," said Mayor Howard Hall after the letter was tabled at a council meeting Monday afternoon. The letter, dated Dec. 17 from Oshawa lawyer Shaun Jain, was written on behalf of Nestleton resi- dent Michael Black. He complains about ultralight aircraft flights from property near Nestleton owned by Bill Lishman. Jain says in the letter "that neigh- bors of Mr. Lishman get the impres- sion that he is getting away with vio- lation of the bylaw because he is a big 'shot and a well known personality." Jain alleges that Lishman is car- rying on commercial ultralight air- craft flights from the property on the Please Turn to Page 9 spectators. Kinsmen move sled dog races south By Chris Hall Port Perry Star With less than a month to go until the first race, Port Perry's Kinsmen are bugily preparing for their fourth annual Canadian National Sled Dog Derby. Spectators will notice a few changes this year at the Feb. 1-2 races, most notably that they are at Trillium Trails in Raglan and not in downtown Port Perry. According to Dave Goldberg, a local Kinsman and one of the organizers of the event, the choice to move out of Port was taken to better protect the participants and the "We wanted to protect those who participated and the people who came out to watch. We've had some terrible weather in the past which caused some concern, and we've also had snowmobilers who've disturbed the races before," said Mr. Goldberg, referring to a wind storm in 1995 which resulted in two teams getting lost on Lake Scugog. "We wanted to have it in town but we also wanted pro- tection, snow-making machines and good trails to hold the Turn to Page 12 Snowmobile thefts increase in Scugog: police By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star It appears Scugog's snowmobile thieves are back in business -- and Sunday night, they hit one local man'in a big way. Durham Regional Police said that sometime during the night a Jeep, trailer and snowmobile worth a combined $20,000 were stolen from a home in Port Perry. Police recovered the 1990 Jeep - - its steering column was broken and the stereo torn out -- on Marsh Hill Rd. south of Cragg Rd. around 9:30 Monday morning. The trailer was attached to the truck but the snow machine, a 94 Polaris XLT, was still missing. The truck, trailer and snowmo- bile were stolen from a home on Simcoe St. south of Reach St. sometime overnight Sunday. It was just one theft during recent days, and another in a long string of thefts that make for a disturb- ing trend whenever snowmobile season comes to Scugog. Sgt. Ken Hudson of Durham Police's 26 Division said that the thefts go on throughout the sea- son, despite the best efforts of owners -- who often go so far as to chain their machines up -- to foil thieves. "If people want things badly enough, they'll find a way to take them," he said. Sgt. Hudson offered this story as an example: N FOR YOUR MET EY OR USED Vii Sometime overnight last Wednesday (Jan. 8), thieves attempted to steal a 1990 Bombardier snow machine that was chained to a metal pole in the yard at a home on Regional Rd. 21, west of Utica. They cut through the chain, then dragged the machine about 75 feet to a wire fence, said Sgt. Hudson. The thieves then cut through the fence and dragged the snowmobile into a field. When the machine would start, the thieves abandoned it where they had dragged it. Police found three distinct sets of foot prints at the scene. 0 In yet another incident, once Please Turn to Page 22 JRE IME, I> PONTIAC BUICK LIMITED 10 Vanedward Drive, Port Perry 985-8474
