Crisphead lettuce is more popularly known as iceberg lettuce, which technically is incorrect. This is the most common lettuce largely because it is perfectly suited to the rigors of long-distance travel and the stresses of harvesting and marketing. Crisphead lettuces have firm heads, usually about 6 inches/| 5cm. in diameter with pale green leaves and a crisp, juicy texture. The taste is very mild. Butterhead lettuce has small loose-leafed heads with soft, delicate leaves and a subtle, wonderfully buttery taste. The chief commercial varieties are Boston and Bibb lettuce. Boston is medium-sized, with a firm, clearly defined head which tends to be a little pointed and has thick, broad, smooth, meaty leaves. Bibb lettuce is regarded by many as the ultimate lettuce, the lettuce to end all lettuces. It is small with dark green leaves which are perfectly tender and have a delicate buttery flavour. Bibb lettuce has five times the nutrients of iceberg lettuce. food plus zeh MARKETS 852-1212 Flare prank Scugog firefighters were also called out on Jan. 17 around 10:17 p.m. They were sent out to 435 Carnegie Beach Rd. when flares were spotted on the ice. I have been in practice thirteen years and am looking forward to working in Port Perry. I am a conservative, biomechanically oriented chiropractor who likes to work manually and also with (physiotherapy) modalities for soft tissue and sports injuries. I run a foot clinic every Saturday afternoon and make orthotics for all types of footwear and sports activities. I have always run a family practice and enjoy looking after infants, children and adults alike. Chiropractic has changed a lot over the last ten years. Some quick facts may surprise you: - over 10% of the Ontario population is actively undergoing chiropractic care - the total budget for chiropractic care is capped professionally at $86 million for almost 2000 chiropractors - as of August |, 1996 the patient portion of the fee is now eligible for private insurance coverage - affiliation with a major Ontario University is currently being negotiated In the coming weeks I would like to tackle a few clinical concerns in this forum. I look forward to serving you and this community well. Llewellyn Jones, a 39-year-old high school teacher who lives in Scugog Point, said late last week he wants the Progressive Conservative nomination for Durham. The father of three said he is committed to the policies of party leader Jean Charest. A date has not yet been set for a nomination meeting, but it's expected to be held within a month. Mr. Jones is a long-time member of the PC party who has worked on the provincial scene on issues such as education reform and poli- cy changes. He unsuccessfully challenged John O'Toole for the Conservative nomi- nation in Durham East prior to the provincial elec- tion in 1995. He lists among his priorities the economy and job creation, as well as a "revitalization" of federal government. He wants to see Bill C-68, the gun control law, repealed, and a major overhaul of the Young Offenders Act. His campaign is being managed by Bob Burke, who helped Mr. O'Toole in his pursuit of the provin- cial nomination a couple of years ago.
