"A Family Tradition for 131 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 28, 1997 - 11 Slow sales kill Burns dinner Event was fundraiser for Highland Games By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Slow ticket sales are to blame for the cancellation of the Traditional Burns Supper and Ceilidh, Saturday (Jan. 26) in Port Perry. Organizers of the event -- which was planned as a fundraiser for the Highlands of Durham Games next summer -- are quick to point out that while the loss of the evening will hurt financially, it's not the end of the world. "The ticket sales were low and we did not meet our break-even point of 120 people," said Ward 1 Councillor and organizer, Doug Moffatt. He said just 60 tickets wee sold, and admits that the $50 ticket price may have scared some people off. to refund everyone's ticket. Plus some of the other din- ners were cheaper." Mr. Moffatt said that the money collected from this dinner was to be put in the bank fund for the Highlands of Durham Games this year. The first edition of the games was held in Port and Uxbridge last summer and was successful in terms of attendance. There was a slight monetary loss. This year's games are to be held July 24-26. Plans call for a large cattle and livestock show, Scottish Dancing, over 200 Highland Dancers and police bands from both Canada and the United States. Organizers are hoping that more than 10,000 spectators come to take in the spectacle. Events will take place in Port Perry and Uxbridge's Elgin Park again this year. Mr. Moffatt also acknowledges that the organizers cannot be faulted for lack of trying. "We're really working on making this year the best. The loss of the dinner was not crippling. It was a good idea, but like all good ideas, it needs to be more than an idea." "There were too many things going on that same night. That kind of hurt us. Other places like Oshawa and Whitby were having their Burns dinner too.
