"A Family Tradition for 131 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 28, 1997 - 19 -- Not ready for pasture Kawartha An Worthy fights back from injury, wins award By Heather McCrae Special to the Star - When local trotter Kawartha An Wor- thy, suffered a career threatening injury in January 1994, everyone thought the mare's racing days were over. But she's * proven the experts wrong. At a black tie affair last Saturday eve- ning, Jan. 25, Kawartha An Worthy was awarded an O'Brien award as Canada's Aged Trotting Mare of the Year. The mare also held the Woodbine track record of 1:55 in 1996 for aged mares and holds the Canadian mark, as well. In January 1994, just weeks after Bob Burgess had paid $20,000 for the horse, the mare clipped herself while heading for the starting gate in a race at Woodbine, severing a ligament in herleft front leg. The track vet said she'd never race again, but would make a good broodmare, Mr. Burgess said. "That didn't make me feel good, as I had bought her to race." But following orders, he had the mare bred to one of the best stallions, Balanced Image. That union resulted in the birth of a strap- ping young colt, Fine Balance, the follow- ing year. But, in the fall of '95, Kawartha An Wor- thy looked so impressive and sound as she ran in the paddock with her foal, her own- | er and trainer, Rocco Auciello, chose to" put her back in training again. Within two months, Kawartha An Wor- thy qualified to race. And in the few weeks left in 1995, Mr. Burgess' beloved trotter showed she could still outrun the best. Never ceasing to amaze her owner, train- er and driver, she chalked up $9,900 in six starts. "I had faith in her," Mr. Auciello said. And later, throughout 1996, Kawartha An Worthy won 11 races, grossing an amaz- ing $122,886 -- and most of that racing was again male competition. "There aren't that many mares in the aged trotting mares class, so she ends up racing against stallions and geldings, of- ten leaving them behind in a cloud of dust," Mr. Auciello said. Another amazing feat about Kawartha An Worthy is the fact she successfully competed at the track again after foaling. Quite often, after a mare has foaled, she seldom makes a comeback. But the mare has the makings of a fine athlete. "She's got a big heart and always gives 100 per cent of herself," her trainer said. But it hasn't been solely the work of Mr. Auciello that's brought the horse back to such an amazing feat. Since Mr. Bur- gess bought the mare, her driver has al- ways been Kelvin Rose. "She knows me pretty good," Mr. Auciel- lo says, "but Kelvin's driving has been a great tribute to her success, too. A lot of rivers would have given up on her 'cause she's so contrary on the track." Kelvin Rose was in the driver's seat the night Kawartha An Worthy sustained her career-threatening injury. "Nobody felt worse than I did when she injured her- self," he said. "But the way she's turned out has been a dream." Now seven years old, Kawartha An Worthy's home is at Glenn Van Camp's stable north of Utica. Plans are to have the mare race as long as she competes well. "Then she'll become a mother again," Mr. Burgess said. But the owner hopes the story won't end here. Fine Balance is now training on schedule and will begin his own racing ca- reer next year. If he has half the heart and drive of his mother, this gelding should make a few heads turn at the racetrack, too. At the O'Brien Awards another horse owned by a local breeder was recognized as well. Riyadh, a gutsy pacer owned by Peter Heffering of Port Perry tied with Whenu- wishuponastar, a two-year-old filly pacer, for Horse Of The Year for 1996. It marks the first time in the Canadian Standardbred sport that two horses have tied for the coveted honour as the nation's Horse Of The Year. 1996 marked the fifth straight year at the races for the courageous campaigner, Riyadh, and the remarkable horse contin- ues to dazzle racing fans across North America with his speed and class. Riyadh set a number of world, track and stakes records last season, including the all-time fastest mile in Canada (1:48.4) and earned $648,000 in 1996, putting his lifetime earnings over $2.5 million. Riyadh was also named Canada's Old- er Pacing Horse Of The Year for 1996. The whimsically named Whenuwishu- ponastar, owned by her trainer, Bob McIntosh of Windsor and three other partners won all her 17 starts in 1996, earning over $426,000. Dominating her Ontario Sires Stakes division, Whenuwishuponastar also cap- tured the title of Canada's Two Year Old Pacing Filly Of The Year. IEORIS Port edges Whitby in close game Port Perry Metal Pro- cessing just edged out Whitby Autowreckers in their exciting game on Saturday, Jan. 26 posting a final score of 3-2. Whitby opened the scoring with a al by Jon Breen assisted By Mat Menear and Mike cintyre. Within less than a min- ute Kevin Glouster tied the game for Port Perry, with assists going to Dar- ryl Copithorn and John utka. In the opening minute of the second period Craig Kehoe lifted the puck into the top corner of the net to put Whitby ahead by one, on a passing play from Chris Jackson and Maggio Robins. Port Perry Metals had some great scoring chanc- es thanks to hard work by Adam Smart and Kristy Ashton, but Kellen Jack- son made great saves to keep his team ahead. Mat Menear showed good hus- tle and Maggie Robins was a tenacious forechecker for Whitby. Finally late in the third period Port Perry got a lit- tle luck and Kevin Gloust- er banked a shot in from behind the net to tie the game. Then with 2:33 left to go, Peter Dutka shot the puck in from the blue line to Kevin Glouster, who fed the puck to Darryl Copit- horn, and he took a blister- ing shot from point blank range to score the winning goal. + ~~ * r # 7 bd rv At the prestigious O'Brien Awards which honour the nation's top harness racing horses and people over the past racing season, Scugog Township was rently .well represented. Cottrell's jumped on board. Mitch Sauder to Collin Holditch and in the net. "Instant Replay" Ash- ley did it once again. Gra- ham Hofstetter slid one to Lucas F. and bingo. Justin Cottrell, Steve Guthrie and Russell Lee showed lots of hustle out there, but the Lions roar was just a little too loud. - Jason Cottrell made some spectacular saves to keep the score to a minimum.
