PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 28, 1997 -5 "A Family Tradition for 131 Years" From Page 1 worked because they get proper traction. While there may only be two teams signed up for the competition so far, organizers aren't beginning to wor- ry,says Mr. Goldberg. "We've only had a couple of teams sign up but that's not unusual because the majority sign up and pay their entry fee when they arrive." He says that while he hasn't received their money, and therefore cannot officially say they've been en- tered, Mr. Goldberg says that he has received verbal confirmation from American teams from Cleveland, Toledo, Atlanta, and New York as well as others. There will also be plenty of teams from southern Onta- rio towns such as New Hamburg, Colborne, Lindsay, Oakville and London will send their best to the compe- tition. The championship derby will raise funds for the Ca- nadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and is expected to draw over 20,000 spectators and many members of the media as live cut-ins will be done by Q107, Magic 94.9 and KX96 Country with prizes being given away. While the Port Perry Kinsmen Club will be organiz- ing the event, they will be receiving help from Durham and Sir Sandford Fleming College students, Port Perry Cadets, and the 1st Port Perry Scouts. Organizers confident of success The North Shore Amateur Radio Club will alsobe on hand to take care of communications and a St. John's Ambulance crew will be available for first aid or emer- gencies. Besides the racers, many other famous faces can be seen at the event as Durham Region chairman Jim Witty will be present for the ribbon cutting ceremony on Saturday morning. Other familiar faces scheduled to make an appearance are Tyler Briley, a Port Perry sculptor, CFTO sports broadcaster Lance Brown and his colleague Kate Wheeler, who will be defending her titlein the media challenge. According to Mr. Goldberg, some of the public has questioned the move of the event out of town, but he wants to assure everyone that the choice made was the rightone. "We made the move to make the safety of those com- peting and those watching our first priority. The move to Trillium Trails also allows us to hold other events that we wouldn't be able to hold otherwise." Besides watching the races, visitors will also be able to skate and partake in adog sled or luge ride. He also wishes to remind people to follow the Husky Head signs, found at major intersections in Durham, to the racing facility and that no pets will be allowed to enter the grounds. The mayor says that while he understands that in these economic times downsizing is a must, he does not want to create a police shortage in Scugog. "People are very critical of police protection. There are a lot of vandalizing and car thefts, but the po- lice are working behind the scenes and getting everything under control. "TT just want to make sure that the people here are served to the best pos- sible extent. I want them to know that they are safe." While the closure and movement of 26 Division is one scenario, the mayor doesn't see how it could possibly happen. "I don't see how it could be very practical; I don't think it would work. But, right now there's just ru- mors. "We could see Sunder- land close down and every- one could move to Port Perry. Who knows? I just think it's a little silly to have only two centers in Durham." It could take police more than 40 minutes to re- * spond to a call if they were to be based out of the Sun- derland Division, he said. He also stated that amal- gamating the stations utilities but they would also increase their gas and oil costs and have more wear and tear on the cars and big time loss. "More importantly though, the people would lose that feeling of police protection. In Port Perry, that's a good feeling. If weighed in the end, the savings in dollars does not warrant the changing of gites. The level of comfort would not be good." While rumors continue to circulate in Port, there has been no missing them in Uxbridge either. Uxbridge Mayor Gerri Lynn O'Connor says that A call to the service of our party and country with Sam Cureatz as our standard bearer.
