10- PORT PERRY STAR - = Tuesday, February 25, 1997 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Smoking foes take heart in tough stance by Ottawa By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Some Durham Region doctors breathed a sigh of relief last Wednesday when it was announced that the federal govern- ment will press ahead with plans for strict tobacco advertising laws. Angered that govern- ment officials 2 peared to be backing off on their promise of the new legis- lation, a few local doctors ° and residents started protesting to their federal . and provincial leaders, in hopes of changing their minds. Bill C-71 will regulate where tobacco companies may advertise, particular- ly at highly promoted, and televised sports and cul- tural events. According to Jean Nesbitt, the Program Manager for Tobacco Use Prevention at the Durham Region Health Department, doctors had IF IT CARRIED ANY MORE SS rh a PASSENGERS OR CARGO Er rT HT Er rr HH Hr rH HH rr et rh tH Hr TH HH HH 1 FH HHT HH HH HH HH HH IT WOULD COME WITH WINGS. sent many letters to fed- eral Health Minister David Dingwall and Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien to make sure their Bill C-71 promise stands. GET WHAT YOU WANT BUICK their efforts paid off when the health minister 'announced that he plans to push the bill through, only allowing sports and culture organizers one year to phase out and find replacements for their tobacco sponsors. Originally Mr. Dingwall had stated that motor sports and tennis events, along with music and culture festivals and fireworks displays, who rely on funding from tobac- co companies, would be given three years to find new sponsorship. The quick and decisive decision by the health min- ister came as a surprise to Ms. Nesbitt, who was quite excited about the victory. "We are really pleased with this. Mr. Dingwall is giving no exceptions, which is good news," Ms. Nesbitt said. "The one year phase- out period is better than the three years that was suggested. Every ysar they delay doing this, peo ple die." The latest numbers available from Durham's Health Department state that 12,000 people died last year because of cigarettes. While organizers of the high-profile events effect- ed by the new bill plan to appeal the government's decision through the courts, Ms. Nesbitt says that the doctors. will con- tinue to write to Minister Dingwall, applauding his decision and urging him to pass the legislation quickly. With everyone working together, a healthier Canada can be made, says Ms. Nesbitt. "Everyone should do what they can to urge the passing of the legislation. . The health of Canada is depending on thr passage of Bill C-71."
