"A Family Tradition for 131 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 25, 1997 - 11 - Young actors all set to strut stuff at local festival By Chris Hall Port Perry Star While it's a long road to the professional acting industry, local high school students will make an . attempt at being recog- nized as excellent actors when they make a trip to Pickering this week. ~ Two Port Perry High School drama groups will be making the trek to Dunbarton High School in Pickering for the Sears Festival, an annual event allowing area high schools to showcase their studen- t's talent. The festival has been a competitive drama event for over 50 years in Canada, which highlights the student's efforts and gives them an excellent opportunity to strut their stuff. A group of junior per- formers, made up of most- ly grade nine students, will perform "Once Upon A Playground" this Friday (Feb. 28) at the Pickering high school. Directed by Mindi Yake, a grade 12 student with some directorial experi- ence, the play is described as a comedy-drama by PPHS Drama and English teacher, Stephanie Fox- Comery. The play studies dis- crimination, stereotyping. and individual differences through the eyes of chil- dren on the playground. The trip to Dunbarton High School will be the first trip to the Sears Festival for the majority of those involved with that performance. Instructed by John Crocker, a drama teacher, and Ms. Fox-Comery, the students have been work- ing hard producing and rehearsing their programs since September and are looking forward to pre- senting them in a compe- tition and to the public. "The festival will be a good way for them to cele- brate their hard work and good way for people to rec- ognize their talent. We are trying to encourage the local community to come out and watch the performances," said Ms. Fox-Comery, adding that there will be a public adju- dication after the show. Port Perry students have made plenty of trips to the festival over the past years and have occa- sionally went on to the next level of competition like "The Scent of a Honeysuckle" did last school year. The remaining Port Perry performance will begin at 7 p.m. at Dunbarton High School in Pickering, 655 Shepperd Ave., and tickets, $7 each, can be reserved by calling 839-1125.
