22- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 25, 1997 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Short stands tall in tough loss for CTC Midgets On Saturday night at the Scugog Arena Doug Short stood extra tall in net and even stood on his head to make steps and saves that professional oalies can only dream of oing. Time and time Doug came up with the puck and sent the opposition skat- ing away, shaking their heads and wondering how they missed what they thought was a sure goal. Unfortunately, it was not enough, as the Canadi- an Tire Midgets bowed out of their second round of playoffs, losing to Prince Edward County 4-3 in the fifth game of their best of five series. Doug could not be fault- ed as Port played the biggest part of the game short handed, continuous- ly having to kill off penal- ties, twice being two men short on theice. Our first goal came at 6:46 of the first, when Brad Monsma fed it out in front to Ashley Van Shel- ven who waited until the goalie went down and then shot it over him. Ashley played his heart out in this game and unfortunately had to leave early after a collision in the third peri- od. We wish him a speedy recovery. P.E.C. got a quick goal early in the second to tie it and the next 11 minutes were end to end with both goalies making great saves. At the 4:00 mark, it was time to break it open as captain Mike Morden made the play that has be- come his trade mark. Mike picked the puck up at his blue line, carried it down the right hand boards, cut in front of the net and deked the goalie, and then stuffed it behind him. Nice goal Mike. Three minutes later it was tied on a give away in our end and one shot did the damage. With three seconds left in the second one of the weakest shots of the game trickled in giving P.E.l. aone goal lead. Port came out flying in the third, but penalties took their toll. We played most of the period short handed and at 8:48, P.E.I. caught ps standing around and put another nail in the coffin, going up 4-2. With a couple of time- outs and the goalie pulled, we eventually got one more on a flip shot from Ryan Moynes at the point, but we were still playing short-handed, killing off a penalty. The final buzzer ended the year for the boys which certainly was a disap- pointment for alot, as they Specially Equipped with: * 200 hp V6 -- Most Powerful Minivan Engine * 7 Passenger Seating ¢ Air Conditioning * Over 140 Cubic Feet of Cargo Area * Driver and Passenger Airbags * AM/FM Stereo Cassette * 4-Wheel ABS Brakes Three Wa The Fam Gs 5) i wi $ » By Ani i; Introducing the NEW '98 Windstar! 298 ys To Balance ily Budget. iE 2g " Family Entry 0.0.0. 6 We put safety and your CILIATE] & | New for '98 System! ° Rover Window, \ocks & Minas Windstar is the only minivan to earn five stars - the [ * 4-Spe utomatic Transmission 24 M h L highest possible U.S. Government front-end crash * New - Tip/Slide Driver's Seat . ont ease test rating - for both the driver and front passenger.' * Plus the Luxury of Quad Captain's Chairs with $2,995 Downpayment - GREAT PRICE 518,445! 97 Villager GS _ 97 Aerosport XLT 24 Month Lease 24 Month Lease with $2,995 Downpayment with $2,995 Downpayment NOW -with So Much for So Little! National Highway Safety Administration data used in comparing vehicles within 226kq (500 Ths) played their hearts out Saturday night. You have already heard of the heroics of Doug Short, and in the earlier game, Corey Branton was also equal to the task. All the boys played ex- cellent throughout the year with various stars at various times. And lets not forget our coaching staff, who de- serve most of the credit for bringing this team togeth- er and getting them as far as they did. It's hard to believe that four men can have such a dramatic effect on boys in their late teens, but we be- lieve that every member of the team will long remem- ber these coaches, and their dedication to the game. Steve Thompson, Ed Hobbs, Gary Smith and Eric Donnelly earned the respect of every boy on the team as well as parents. From the keg party to the inspiration of "Matilda," to winning our home tour- nament, it was a year to remember. Eaglettes lose, 3-2 The K.C.I. Novice Ea- glettes ringette squad ven- tured to Jordan, near St. Catharines for a weekend tournament and gave the fans as much excitement as could be. On Saturday afternoon Kitchener felt the wrath of the Eaglettes awesome of- fence. Amanda Curry and Jenna Davison both scored four times. Logan Garland, Jill Hunter and Caitlyn Hellihgman all had the hat tricks while Carley Churchill and Julie Tapper both scored sin- gles. Goals are only the end product of passes and helpers went to Lauren Guthrie with three and Kimberly Wilson and Caitlin Dunn both set up two. As expected the opposi- tion became progressively harder. Identical 5-5 ties with Jordan and Paris sent Port Perry to the final where Paris returned on Sunday well rested. The Paris goalie turned Aman- da away time and again but Jenna Davison finally solved him. With the score 2-1 Lyndsay Whyte made several spectacular saves to keep Port within strik- ing distance. Kelly Ur- quart scored a beautiful goal to even things up ear- lyin the final frame. With overtime looming both goalies again came up big. With just 53 sec- onds left Paris chipped one in to gain a 3-2 victory. It's too bad a loser has to be de- clared in games like this but such-is the game.
