SENA-- "A Family Tradition for 131 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 11, 1997-13 Hospitals From Page 1 "We've been told that the government wants to have an equitable division of services across the province, and we're all for that. We've always been under- always been overfund- ed. If they even things up like they say, this could be good for Durham," said Dr. Armstrong. When asked what he thinks about the future of the soon-to-be- merged Community Memorial and Cottage Hospitals, Dr. Armstrong remained positive. "The Restructuring Commission will be looking at efficiency, cutting administration costs, and combining things like clerical ser- vices. The initiative to share is what the com- mission wants to see. "We just want them to come in here, take a look and make their decisions so we can get on with developments," said the executive director, guessing that a final decision could come near the end of the summer or early fall. Jerry Taylor, the chair of the County Memorial Hospital board, says that he was not surprised at the huge cuts in Toronto. And of course, he hopes the cuts here aren't as bad. "There was lots of warning and activity in Toronto before the cuts but it's still quite a shock to see that many major changes in that area," said Mr. Taylor. "More money should go back into the front- line; into the patients. But, taking a look at all these huge changes, I sure hope the govern- ment has done their homework and knows what they're doing." While he acknowl- edges the fact that the Harris government is attempting to equalize funds and services across Ontario, Mr. Taylor hopes the com- mission recognizes smaller communities as well.. "I'd like to see more money go to rural areas; the money should be equal among all the areas outside of Toronto." He also hopes that | the merging of the Port Perry and Uxbridge hospitals will be seen as a positive act by the commission, and that there will be no major changes here. "I just hope that the commission finds our actions favorable and that no jobs will be lost. funded and Toronto's Tips are sought In blaze PERFORMANCE DEALERS YOUR PONTIAC Crime Stoppers and Durham Regional Police are asking for your help in solving an arson that oc- curred in Blackstock on Dec. 14 of last year.
