i | ! | id "A Family Tradition for 131 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 11, 1997 - 17 Cartwright girls tops at 12-team invitation meet By Melissa Killen and Alanna Holland On March 1 Cartwright Central Public School's Junior girls basketball team won a 12 team tour- nament at R.H. Cornish and S.A. Cawker Cartwright first played Sunset Heights from Oshawa. It was a tough, fast moving game but with a lot of hustle and team work Cartwright defeated Sunset Heights 28-8. Cartwright then played a game against Palmers- ton and came up with the victory with a score of 35- 14. Then Cartwright head- ed for the "A" division semi-finals. In the semi- finals Cartwright played Cornation. Cartwright played well both defen- sively and offensively win- ning 19-15. Cartwright then ad- vanced to the final game against a very tall Dr. Thorton team. Cartwright played one of their best games of the tournament and won it 22-14. For winning the cham- pionship game every player on Cartwright's team received a Scugog 1997 invitationals cham- pions t-shirt, while Dr. Thorton players each re- ceived a hat. Cartwright junior girls basketball team played some great basketball games and Cartwright School is very proud of them. 4-2 win for PP Metal On March 8 Scugog Lumber nipped Port Perry Metal Processing 4-2. This was an exciting game with lots of end to end action, and both goalies had shut- outs for the first two peri- ods. Brady Gray and Robert Larmer both came up with great saves, but finally early in the third period Josh Page managed to score first for Scugog Lum- ber, assisted by Ryan Petch. Bobby Robinson added one more for Scugog Lum- ber on a nice pass from Brady Harrison. Port Perry Metals turned up the heat and Kristy Ashton finally got the chance to notch one, assisted by Darryl Copit- horn. Kevin Glouster took a beautiful pass from Craig Simmonds to tie the game. Scugog Lumber then took advantage of a defen- sive breakdown, and Bra- dy Harrison got the win- ning goal on a three-on- one break, with the assist going to Ryan O'Leary. Winners were the Roosters, Chargers, Aces, Flames and Comets. Pizza Delight 3 J&D Carpentry 2 This game went back and forth as both teams scored one after the other. Garry Lance had a big game as he scored a point on each goal. Roosters opened the game with a goal by Garry Lance, assisted by Steve Dunn. Hawks came back with a goal by Todd Healey assisted by Dennis Lycett. Carl Fitzgerald then scored for the Roosters assisted by Garry Lance and Fred Moffatt. Brad Hurst tied it up for the Hawks assisted by Steve Groves and Dave Brownson. Roosters game winner was scored by Garry Lance assisted by Steve Dunn and Carl Fitzgerald. Monsma Electric Pineridge Sports 3 In this game the Chargers were on fire as they beat - the Wolves 5-3. Jeff Card played well as he had three points. Wolves opened the scoring on a goal by Peter Lane assisted by Steve Connors and Paul Van Camp. Then the Chargers scored three goals. Scoring them were Bret Laycoe, and Jeff Card (two). Assists were earned by Ritchie Le Fort (two), Brian Stevenson and Bill Van Camp. Steve Connors scored next for the Wolves as- sisted by Paul Van Camp and Jaime Taylor. Colin As- selstine and Ritchie Le Fort scored the last two for the Chargers as Jack Monsma, Marvin Stevenson, Jeff Card and Bill Van Camp each picked up an assist. Steve Connors scored in the last minute assisted by Tim Ashbridge and Jaime Taylor. Taylor Fuels 4 Ball/Caller & Assoc. 3 In this game the Aces edged out the Senators by a Scugog Hockey League playoffs roll on score of 4-3. Warren Geer picked up three points for the Senators. Randy Prosser and Brad Menzies opened the scor- ing with a goal each. Assists went to Mike Clarke (two), Mark Pehlemann and Greg Fitzgerald. Warren Geer scored for the Senators assisted by Todd Wilbur and Bob Beveridge. Rick Campbell made it 3-1 for the Aces. Assisted by Greg Fitzgerald and Dave Jackson. Ken Jeffrey scored the Senators next two goals, as- sisted by Warren Geer (two), Todd Wilbur and Bob Beveridge. Rick Campbell scored the Aces fourth goal which would be the winner. Greg Fitzgerald picked up the lone assist. Harrison Fuels 6 Cedar Creek Contracting 4 This was a high scoring offensive game as both teams racked up the goals. Larry Pilkey had four points for the Flames and Mike McQuade had a hat trick for the Clippers. Scoring for the Flames were Rick Sheehey assisted by Jim Beatty and Brian Samis, Karl Durham from Larry Pilkey and Jim Beatty, Wayne Hancock from Karl Durham and Larry Pilkey, Brian Samis from Rick Sheehey and Wayne Norton, Larry Pilkey from Karl Durham and Dave Dickson, and Larry Pilkey scored unassisted. Scoring for the Clippers were Derek Fitzgerald assisted by Jason Warner, Mike McQuade from Jim Park, Mike McQuade from John Harman and Jim Park, and Mike McQuade assisted by John Harman and Jaime Menzies. Compton Cable T.V.6 Van & Truck World 3 This was a good game for the Comets as they dou- bled up on the Sharks 6-3.
