8- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 25, 1997 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Spring concert will feature gospel and classical music Music lovers can enjoy a night of gospel and classical music April 19 at the Port Perry United Church. Conductor Leendert Kooij will lead a choir that includes his wife Maria (centre) and Ali Klel of Blackstock. By Heather McCrae Port Perry Star Music lovers, young and old, will be treated to a night of gospel and classical music when the choirs, brass and band of the Ontario Christian Music Assembly presents their 36th annual spring concert at Port Perry United Church on Saturday, April 19. Leendert Kooij, conductor for the con- cert immigrated from Holland in 1959, coming to Canada to study music at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. He started two choirs in 1961, and earned his ARCT (Associate of the Royal Conservatory of Toronto) four years later. When anyone talks to Mr. Kooij about music, his face literally lights up. Music is his life; something he's been able to share with his wife, Maria, and their children. Eight of his nine children participate in the concerts and one grandchild has now joined the choir. Maria, known as the 'mother' of the organization sings in the choir and also plays the big bass drum in the band. Forming a trio, their three daughters, Johanna, Jacqueline and Francine, add a lively and vibrant touch to the program with their spirited renditions of present day Christian songs. Every year a new concert series is held in the springtime and at Christmas. For years, in November, they've held a Christian Festival Concert at Roy Thomson Hall. "We have the hall already booked for the next couple of years," Mr. Kooij says. It was last summer when Mr. Kooij came to Port Perry to play the organ at a wedding in the United Church, he began having serious thoughts about presenting a concert in town. "The choirs had already performed in Lindsay, Peterborough and Bowmanville. Since a lot of our choir members live in Blackstock and Port Perry, we thought it would be nice to come here," Mr. Kooij said. One hundred singers and band players, made up of youth and adults, are ready to put on a show you won't forget. Admission is $10 for adults; students $6 and children under 12 are free. "We encourage families to bring their kids," he says. "It's a lovely concert, a constant variety of gospel and classical music and the audi- ence should come prepared to sing along," he said. Tickets are available from Jayson Callan Music, Lammy Van Ginhoven in Port Perry at 985-9050 or Ali Klei in Blackstock, 986-5856.
