"A Family Tradition for 131 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 8, 1997 - 19 ------ Sr PORT PERRY STAR ORTS Swimming up a storm HOLD YOUR BREATH: During their swim-a-thon last Sunday, 81 members from the Uxbridge Swim Club swam a total 13,958 lengths of the pool for a total of 348,950 metres. The event is a yearl fundraiser which brings in an average of $15,00 to $18,000 for the local club. The swim began at 7 a.m. and lasted until 1 p.m. Swimmers were divided CHRIS HALL / PORT PERRY STAR into groups depending on their age, and had to either swim 200 laps or for two hours. "D-Final" Monsma Chargers 3 J&D Hawks 2 The first. game of the day got the action rolling in fine form and set the tone for all the other games to follow. Both teams are noted for their speed, tenacious checking and tough goaltending. The Hawks struck first as John Mackey found the mark assisted by Lee Steeves. The Chargers evened things up on a solo effort | | | | by Ritchie Le Fort to end | the first period. In the sec- | ond the fans were treated | to end-to-end hockey and a | lone goal from Charger Jeff Card assisted by Brian "Red" Stevenson and crafty Bill Van Camp. Early in the final frame it looked like it was anyone's game! With the Hawks press- ing for the equalizer, Lee Wilbur sent Jeff Card away on a break-a-way and the young rookie add- ed his second to put the Chargers up 3-1. Down three gees to two, the Port team trav- elled to Strathroy on Sat- urday, April 6 for game six. Exciting end to end ac- tion prevailed, with no scoring in the first period. Strathroy started out the scoring in the second, gaining a 2-0 lead. Strong offensive plays by Russ Brown, Joel Van Camp and Jon Sanders. The Port boys were de- termined, dug in and popped in four goals in the second. Starting the scor- ing, Scott Brownson, un- assisted; then Kam Coop- er on a pass from Bill Carr; Wade Ritchie from Scott B.: Wade, unassisted. In the third, our fifth goal was a beauty, with our team two men short Wade got the puck at their blue line, maneuvered around two players and took a slap shot that blew by the goaltender (hat trick). Strathroy scored once more in the third to make the final score 5-3. Mark Delaney and John Burnett were tough on de- fense. Awesome goaltending by Chris Loughlin and Chris Monsma in this series. The final and deciding game was on Sunday, April 6 at 2 p.m. This game was a nailbiter, with Port jumping on the scoreboard just nine seconds into the first period on a goal by Bill Carr from Kam. Strathroy tied up the game, and then Bill scored on a nice pass from Mike Levon to take the lead. Vigorous action in the sec- ond found our team short- handed for six long min- utes. Great penalty killing They rally after falling behind 3-0 in final series kept the opposition from any power play goals. Quick thinking plays by Matt Caldwell, Joel Thom- son and Scott Cunning- ham. Third period action had the Port team scoring first, a great goal by Ste- ven Wygerde from Bill and Cam. The Strathroy team did not let up, and scored twice to tie the game and force overtime. Just 19 seconds into overtime, Scott B. made a pass to Matt McGarry to Wade and he sent it into the net to take the win and make the Port team cham-' pions! The elated team erupted onto the ice and the fans were wild! The fans provided great sup- port in this series and rought air horns, tin plates with wooden spoons along with encouraging cheering.
