Durham Police will be holding a seminar Thurs- day (April 10) at the Scu- gog Township office to help educate people who want to protect them- selves from becoming vic- tims. In an attempt to reduce the number of robberies in the region and to capture criminals, Durham Police are trying to educate retail business owners and their employees on how to lower the risks of becoming po- tential targets. "We're going to give the audience some tips on how to help prevent becoming a victim and to show them some tricks of the trade," said Durham Police Sgt. Paul Malik. A video and statistics are part of the program. "We want to target as many businesses as we -- -- --- -- p-- H = 3 1 -- afalsizich can in the region and bring in a team of three to six of- ficers to talk to store own- ers, employees and the public," he said. Everyone who comes out to the seminar will each receive a "Robbery Prevention Kit" which in- cludes stickers, pamph- lets, posters and identifi- cation charts. The event is hosted by the Scugog Chamber of Commerce. Chamber President Craig Taylor hopes plenty of people come out to learn how to protect themselves. "We want to reach out to all the local businesses and the public too," said Mr. Taylor. "We're hoping for a good turnout, 40 to 50 people. I think everything will go quite well," he said, saying that the idea was prompt- ed by Mayor Howard Hall, a member of the Police Services Board.
