That's'how Jay Blain, a Grade 10 student at Port Perry High School, is nationally ranked after he wrestled his way to victory at the Canadian National Cadet Championship earlier this month. Blain went undefeated through three 69-kilogram matches at the Fredericton, New Brunswick, tourna- ment between April 2-6. Posting victories over other wrestlers from Quebec and Saskatchewan, the local student faced a teammate from Team Ontario for the gold medal, and came out on top. "All my matches were tough, but the one against the guy from Saskatchewan in the semi-finals was the toughest," he said of his 9-4 win. While taking the gold medal by a score of 11-1, Blain insists that there was some good competition at the Cadet Finals. "The wins over the Quebec and Ontario guys were pretty easy, but they all had good techniques and that made them hard to beat," he said. While this was his second appearance at the National Championships -- he finished seventh last year -- the PPHS student says that he still experienced some but- terflies. "I was kind of relaxed because I knew what to - expect, but I was still majorly nervous," he said. Accompanied by more than 100 other wrestlers from Ontario, Jay Blain says that he enjoyed the trip and is looking forward to his first year of Juvenile wrestling next year. "I 'had a lot of fun this year and I saw a lot of good wrestlers, but now I'm looking forward to Juvenile next year. I watched them for a bit, and they look pretty good." With school letting out around the end of June, Blain says that he will spend his summer days training at Henry St. High School in Whitby. And the 5'7" Port Perry resident already has an idea of what he wants in his future. Number one Cadet in Canada "I'd love to participate in the Olympics," he said, adding that the 2004 Summer Games would be a nice place to start. "It'd be really excellent to represent Canada. I'd be proud to represent our country." CHRIS HALL / PORT PERRY STAR Jay Blain, a Grade 10 student at Port Perry School recently returned home from New Brun where he went undefeated in three matches and won the gold medal. Jill put us ahead, assist to Rhea but they came back. Overtime loomed with a minute left and an even match, but our hot scorer Sarah found the mesh with seven seconds left to seal the victory 7-6. On Saturday their second game was against Oshawa. We broke quickly and scored in the first minute with a goal by Jessica from Jill and Sarah. Oshawa came back with two. In the second the Tweens tied it up when Rhea slipped one in from Kelly and Heather R. Late in the contest they scored two more and the final was 4-2 Oshawa. Saturday night was a big game for the girls, they had to ~ Dramatic rally nets Tween B's re win to have any chance of making it to the championship round. Whitby would be the opposition. In the first Port took a 3-0 lead with Whitby getting one back before the period ended. Scoring for the Tweens was Rhea, Heather T. and Jessica, assists went to Sheena, Jill, Rhea, Shannon and Nicole. In the second the girls scored quickly with Shannon getting the marker, assist to Heather T. Four minutes later Nicole scored from Jessica. Whitby came back with two and that was all as Alaina stood up to the pressure to preserve the win 5-3. The championship game was on Sunday against Pickering. The culmination of the season lay in front of the girls, this is what they had been working for since September. From the opening free pass it was end to end action. They scored first but we came back to tie with Sheena finding the twine, assist to Rhea. Pickering scored again and again and again. It was starting to look bad for our troopers down 4-1 but this seemed to inspire them and it was their turn to go on a scoring rampage. With less than four minutes left Shannon scored from Jill, two minutes later it was Sarah from Shannon, 30 seconds there- after it was Sarah from Heather T. to tie it up. Before the period ended Port got another marker from Sheena, assist to Jill. Pickering managed to tie it up in the dying seconds. After an explosive first both gional title teams settled down in the sec- ond. Few quality scoring chances were given up but the Tweens did take advantage of a miscue for the go ahead goal scored by Jessica, assist to Kelly. Pickering got that one back. With eight minutes left Port scored on a goal by Jill from Sheena and Nicole. Time was winding down our girls were clinging to a one goal lead. Alaina had to shut the door and that's what she did. The Port Perry Pharmacy Tweens had won the big game 7-6 Congratulations girls on your victory. We always knew you could do it and also to the coach- ing staff Dave, Heather and Janice for a successful and enjoy- able season. See you all next season.
