The incumbent, mean- while, hopes people will examine what he says is a successful government record, and reject Conservative and Reform campaigns he says focus on the past. "You can keep attacking (the Liberal record), or you can look to the future," he said. Mr. Shepherd is confi- dent that what he calls the government's record of success on deficit and debt reduction will prove to voters that the Grits can run the country effec- tively, and deserve another term. An uphill battle is likely ahead for the NDP, which finished as an also-ran in the 1993 election here, with just over 2,500 votes. Mr. Argyle said after his nomination Sunday afternoon that voters are largely undecided heading into the vote, and are wait- ing to hear a message of hope for the future. He said he's hoping to attract "soft Liberals" who've been disappointed by the government's per- formance, and are willing to give his party a try.
