BE ii ea 2- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 29, 1997 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Scugog school start times are changing next fall Morning bells will be ringing earlier at the majority of Scugog's public schools next fall. The revised bell times, which will be introduced with the new school year in September, are a necessary consequence of bus- ing revisions aimed at saving money, said Scugog trustee Bobbie Drew. The Durham Region Board of Education will contract fewer buses next year, which means those on the road will have to run more routes. It's a move that will save up to $500,000 between September and December of 1997, and an esti- mate $1.3 million in the next full year. Trustees gave their backing to a motion, put forth by Mrs. Drew, which ensures the sav- ings are given back to schools - to fund supplies and equipment. The injection will represent an 8 per cent increase in so-called "block" budgets. She admits some people might grumble about the earlier start and end of the school day, but argues trustees are follow- ing the demands they're given so often: Save money, and don't raise taxes. "It's a case of trying to save some money," she said. "It allows one bus to make two or three or four runs to more schools." It costs about $150 a day to put a bus on the road, said Mrs. Drew. "The $500,000 (savings) this year is helping to keep the taxes down. Schools in Scugog will see morning bells sounding earlier, for the most part. The excep- tions are R.H. Some merchants were angered when a newslet- ter from the local Business Improvement Association briefly mentioned that because of budget con- straints, the township would not supply a street sweeper this year. Mayor Howard Hall was quick to correct that point, though. "The township's sweep- er has already been used this year and will continue to be used. The letter was incorrect -- [ was at the meeting and said that there would be a street sweeper this year -- and | can assure everyone that the streets will be cleaned this summer," he said. The mayor describes this winter as one of the worst in recent history for ice storms; that means there's a lot of sand on the streets right now. "We've had a really bad winter and because of that we have a lot of sand lying around on the streets. Both Queen and Water St. have been done already a couple of weeks ago and we will keep cleaning all the streets this summer." But Mayor Hall said merchants have to pitch in for the spring clean-up effort, too. "Why should we sweep the streets when the mer- chants don't sweep the sidewalks in- front of their stores? We just want the merchants to sweep the area in front of their stores, and then we'll sweep the roadways," he said last Thursday. He said some areas of town have been cleaned and that right now the township is trying to clean up the sand and waste that litter the streets. Parked cars along the street have been a small problem, he said. The township-owned sweeper has cleaned the streets in Port Perry overnight between Thursday nights and Friday morning for the last five years, said the mayor, and it will continue to do so until winter arrives again.
