It was somewhat less than smooth sailing Sunday for the crew from Woodwind Yachts when they took on Antrim House Pub in the first edition of the Scugog Challenge Cup race on Lake Scugog. At left the craft, crewed by Ken Lavalette and Doug McGrath, sails serenely past Palmer Park on the way to completion of a lap. But above, Mr. Lavalette is towed ashore in the same boat, which took on water on a turn in the course, then flipped over. Its mast became stuck in mud at the bottom of the lake, and assistance from the rescue boat was required. The first edition of the race was won by David Hillier and Theresa Bray of the Antrim, who promptly enjoyed a long draught of Guiness upon reaching shore. The $500 prize for the event was won by Duncan Tindall of Brougham, who donated $250 back to the Scugog library and the rowing club, benefactors of the event.
