The Tories, as you probably know by now, are mired in a nasty fight that has left them without a candidate, although the election was called Sunday for June 2. They'll finally make their selection May 9, a full two weeks into a five-week campaign. And that could just be too late. Their failure to. successully complete the candidate selection process has been coupled with the national fall from grace displayed by the Reform Party to lead some folks to conclude that it's all over but the speechifying; that Alex Shepherd has a cakewalk ahead of him on the way to a second term in office, as a member of the government. Could be. But don't tune out just yet. There's more at stake in this election than meets the eye; the country is poised on the brink of a new millenium, and must choose leadership for the future. Are the candidates before you capable of providing such a vision? Also figuring in this campaign is the fight for the right to be the official opposition. High school teacher Paul Arculus headed up a project to dig up the foundation of the old high school lost in the fire of April 15, 1926 and create a memorial garden with a bronze plaque.
