"A Family Tradition for 131 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, May 6, 1997 - 27 Ready to roll Brooklin Redmen get set to tackle another season of lacrosse By Calvin Curtis The Brooklin Redmen of the Ontario Lacrosse Associ- ation Major Series have completed five practices of a nine game training camp in preparation for the 1997 Major Series season. Brooklin's regular season starts at home on Friday, May 16 against the Peterborough Lak- ers. The Redmen, who re continuing with a youth move- ment started last year, are very excited about the up- coming season. General Manager Paul Cotton is opti- mistic about this year's young team, and the effort that has been shown so far at training camp. "This is the most energetic and exciting training camp that I have seen since I have been part of the Redmen or- ganization. With the core of veterans like John Fusco, Eric Perroni, Glenn Clark, and Paul St. John to provide leadership, together with all the young kids we have, we are going to surprise a lot of people," he said. Additions to watch for with the Redmen this year in- clude: Rob Blasdell, a goaltender formerly of the Fergus Thistles Jonas Derks, who played six games with the Peterbo- rough Lakers last year (six GP, four G, six A, 10 pts., six PIM), and was formerly a top offensive threat with the Whitby Warriors Jr'A' team Val McGraw, who played his first full year in the Ma- Jor Series last year with the Brampton Excelsiors (21 GP, eight G, 13 A, 21 pts., six PIM). Pat Van Hooser, who played his junior lacrosse with the Brampton Excelsiors. One player the Redmen are looking for big things from 1s Orillia's Steve McCreith, who received the Glen Rea- zin Award for Most Improved Player on the Redmen in 1996. Assistant Coach Kevin Van Sickle said "We expect this year to be Steve's breakthrough year. When he first joined the Redmen in 1994, it took him a while to learn the Major game. Steve got a little more floor time in 1995, and then gained a lot of confidence last season as he assumed a regular role. Also expected to be a big factor this year is Dan Ladou- ceur. An imposing presence on the floor at 6'6" 250 Ibs., Ladouceur plays a physical defensive oriented game. The Redmen are hoping that Ladouceur's work schedule with the Durham Region police force will allow him to play more games in 1997 than 1996. One challenge facing the Redmen in 1997 will be cop- ing with the loss of Gary Gait, who will not return to Brooklin this season.
