Flexible liners make pond construction easier Flexible liners make pond construction easier than it once was. None- the-less, you can easily fall into some pitfalls that are hard to fix once the pond is finished. Follow these steps to avoid build- ing a tipsy pond or one that's too big for it's liner. with pegs or short stakes. When marking a square or rectangle, use a right- angle tool to ensure 90 degree angles at each cor- ner. For irregular shapes, outline the diameter with a flexible hose. Remove the hose after marking the shape of the pond with a shallow trench dug along the inside edge. Be level-headed. Leveling the site takes patience that pays off in the end. All you need is a spirit level, a solid straight 2x4, and some pegs. Place the first level- point on the site unless the garden slopes away from the house in which case, in order to see the pond from the house, place the leveling peg at the highest point. Adjust all other pegs around the circumference of the pond to the level of the first peg using the 2x4 and spirit level. Digging in. Once the site is level, start digging. Small ponds can be dug out by hand while larger ones may require a back-hoe with an experienced operator. Keep the subsoil dug from deeper parts of the site in a separate pile from the topsoil. If you plan to frame the pond with a raised area, or berm for a waterfall or rock garden, use the sub- soil as a base and cover with the nutrient-rich ing peg at the lowest topsoil.
