Christian Heritage Party To make non-violent criminals pay back their victims (and the legal cost of their case) instead of adding their room and board, and the support of their families, to the costs their victims must bear? And since two-thirds of prison spaces are occupied by non-violent offenders, once they're out working to pay restitution to their victims, wouldn't it also make sense to keep violent and sexual offenders -- and drug and pornography peddlers off the streets to make our neighbourhoods safer? The CHP says our Criminal Justice system should stand on two pillars: restitution instead of incarceration for non-violent offenders and protecting the public from criminals who are really dangerous to our families. That's the kind of common sense Canadians understand -- and want to see more often from their government. Offices Motorist helps to capture suspect Durham Regional Police are praising the actions of a Courtice man who helped nab a suspect after a cruiser was forced into the ditch last Thursday morning. Durham Police Constable Peter Gayle was northbound on Regional Rd. 23 in an unmarked cruiser, about a kilometre and a half north of Regional Rd. 21 at 7:27 a.m., when a southbound van crossed the centre line, causing him to lose con- trol of his cruiser and leave the roadway, striking two poles. The southbound van con- tinued on without stop- ping, police said. Travelling north- bound behind the offi- cer was Courtice resi- dent Bill Massey, who stopped to help Const. Gayle. The two proceed- ed to follow the van in Mr. Massey's vehicle, while he contacted Durham Police on his cellular phone. The van was later stopped at the inter- section of Regional Rd. 21 and the 7th Concession, where the driver was arrested. Const. Gayle suf- fered minor injuries in the accident and was taken to the Uxbridge site of the North Durham Health Services, were he was checked and released. The unmarked cruis- er received approxi- mately $10,000 in dam- age in the accident. A 51-year-old Bolsover man was charged with failing to stop after an accident, and not driving in a marked lane.
