It's been the theme o every election in recent memory. But we have yet to elect a government that has a significant |. impact on unemployment. Rather, the jobless ranks shrink minimally, only to swell again. Maybe it's a misguided claim to contend that any particular party or government can create jobs. At best, they can introduce and implement policy that fosters the economic conditions that might lead to more employment opportunities. So when a candidate says his or her party is the right choice for job creation, answer right back that the real breeding ground for jobs is here, where small and medium sized businesses are dying to grow... if only governments would let them. o It's too bad that most of the candidates in Durham riding chickened out of an all- candidates' meeting called by the Sportsmens Alliance. Is the gun issue too hot to handle? The meeting was the sole opportunity for the people of Scugog to see all the candidates at once during the brief campaign. When the Alliance circulated notices of its meeting, other groups -- newspapers, for instance -- decided against organizing such town halls. a Is there a prevailing issue among Scugog voters? Most seem to shake their heads, and mutter only that they wish for better times. The problem is that no party or candidate has caught fire, and they see little hope for great improvement. It's a bleak election for bleak times. S ov A NZ Facelift due for Hall? Committee ponders costly renovations to historic site NOT ME YOU IDIOTS! THE 70W/V HALL! 1 To the Editor: Lucky me! I'm one of the few home owners whose property backs onto the beautiful new golf course and development known as Canterbury Common. It's been a marvel to watch the mighty earth movers remold the land, working through months of terrible weather. We watched each day and wondered how on earth you knew the plan to be accomplished. And now, to see all this beauty born out of that incredible effort is a delight. The new lane passing by my yard leads through a wild, untouched forest a on new cours area, and along a creek where water birds gather. The same birds are back and the feeders must be filled daily. We welcome the new neighbors to Port Perry, many of whom stop and chat. Please say hi and enjoy the stroll. Children, ride your bikes, pet walkers, don't be shy. I see the poop ags you're carrying so faithfully, and I know you love your furry friends. So may the golf balls fly high and free and should one land in my back yard, make it a Titleist. You just might never see it again. Margery Webb, Port Perry REMEMBER 55 YEARS AGO Thursday, May 21, 1942 Flying Cadet A.G.
