"A Family Tradition for 131 Years" PORY PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 3, 1997 - 15 Frog power Port students are tops in province with their vehicle By Chris Hall Port Perry Star The Scugog Frog is a winner. After working together, as a team for more than a month, students in Barry Nesbitt's transportation technology class at Port Perry High School were rewarded when the vehicle they built took a first place prize at the Second Annual Great Electric Car Contest. Mr. Nesbitt and his crew of six made the trip to Kingston on May 24, and participated in the event on the Queen's University campus. With close to 30 entries from around the province ready to race in two classes -- PPHS' entry was in the starter motor class, while the other category was an open heat -- the local team took to the line against 18 other cars. The PPHS racing team completed 13 laps around the 1.3 kilometre track in one hour and ten minutes, for first place in their class. Unfortunately, an administrative error at the event saw the first place award go to another school. The plaque recent- ly arrived in Port Perry, though. As much fun as it was for the students, Mr.Nesbitt says that it was very educational as well. "It was a great event to participate in. There was a sea of kids and machines all over the place," he said. His team was the only one from Durham Region. "The kids designed the vehicle themselves. Everybody had something to do, and they all worked together to make the car a success. The winning car, nick- named the Scugog Frog, was designed by Matt Stichman. The vehicle was produced using the front forks of a bicycle, and the rest of the frame was fab- ricated in the school's metal shop. Running on a 12-volt starter motor and cooled by a bag of ice inside a styrofoam cooler, the Frog was able to reach speeds around 40 kilorae- tres per hour. "Our car ran flawlessly at the event. Mechanically, there was nothing wrong with it and it was the best at the meet; lots of other cars didn't even finish," said Mr. Nesbitt, noting that the pit crew had to pour a fresh bag of ice into the cooler after nine laps. "This was a great learn- ing experience for the kids. They got to do different stuff like the fabrication of a unit, testing iton a track and solving any problems they encoun- tered. This project was made by good group dynamics and they all worked real well together." The crew that accom- panied Mr. Nesbitt to the race included Luke Carnaghan, Jason Bosse, Jeremy Gerrow, Brad Shanley, Mat Stichman and Dan Sutherland. Others in the class who helped construct the vehi- cle were John Brunner, Troy Karkoulas, Mike Lott, and Mike Saunders.
