Starting their voyage on May 12, 30-year-old Mike Keeling and Cal Lane, 28, had already ped- aled their way through four provinces and parts of the U.S. before they made a J! brief stop in Port Perry last Friday. Both enrolled in Halifax universities -- he will be working on a philosophy degree at Dalhousie, while she attends the Nova Scotia College of Arts -- the Victoria couple decided more than three months ago that they would spend the summer biking across Canada. "I started planning to go sometime in April and then I called her up and asked if she wanted to go," said Mr. Keeling, a former English teacher. : "She agreed to go and we were waiting to hear if she had been accepted to school, and, lucky for us, we got notice that she was accepted two days before we left." : With no strict route or itinerary to follow, the two soon set off on a journey that would take them to . the east coast, via the back roads of Canada. "We try to find all the quiet roads we can to ride on and stay out of the big cities," said Ms Lane. "We really like to see all the small towns, so we missed places like Calgary and Toronto. "We've seen lots of ani- mals on our way here like bears, goats, and coyotes; we even slept in a coyote den one night." The couple are trying to pedal between 50 to 70 miles daily. They are hop- ing to reach their east coast destination by Aug. 1. Having already covered close to 2,900 miles, they believe that they have just over 1,000 more miles to go before they can stop. Throughout their tour of the country the cyclists have had positive experi- ences all the way. : "We've met other cyclists who were going across the country, and even the transports have been nice; they just honk, wave, and go around us," said Mr. Keeling. ~ "We even met this one guy in Newmarket who said that he biked across Europe and that people were so nice to him over there and that he wanted to help others out so he gave us a bed to sleep in, a nice dinner and then packed us a lunch and gave us directions. We were used to sleeping in the woods wherever we wanted so it was different to be in a bed." Throughout the trip the pair have seen many beau- tiful sites, although noth- ing has equalled the majes- tic Rocky Mountains. "The whole trip has been a lot easier than I expect- ed," said Ms Lane. "We had to climb four tough passes in the Rockies -- one was 19 miles up -- but they were beautiful and full of snow. The climb was definitely worth it."
