8- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 15, 1997 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Don't even think about robbing this lady. Durham Regional Police say an Uxbridge woman not only caught two would-be thieves in the act of robbing her house last week, but also demanded they put back what they'd removed -- and pay for the window they broke while entering her home. Police said that around 1 p.m. last Wednesday, an Uxbridge resident returned home to her Leich Rd. home to find a red Chrysler minivan backed up to her garage. Curious, the woman looked around the van and garage, but found no one. At the back of the house she encountered a man walking out of the basement with her TV. The woman confronted him and told They pay her $60 for window smashed during break-in him to return the television set. The would-be thief complied, police said. The woman accompanied the man to the garage, where a second man was found bending down license plates on the van, presumably to avoid any identi- fication. The woman asked where her VCR was, and the first man told her it was on the ground beside the house, police said. Naturally, the woman demanded he take it back into the house. He did as told, police said. Demands money for window It was at that point the woman noticed that screens on a door and kitchen win- dow were ripped open. As well, a window in a downstairs bathroom was broken. She turned to the second man and asked him who was going to pay for the repairs to her house, police said. He took $60 from his pocket, and offered the woman $20. She said that wouldn't cover the damages -- and took the remaining $40. The two would-be thieves took off from the home, but not before the woman got a few numbers of the van's bent plates. Police are also crediting an Uxbridge teen with providing them vital informa- tion that may lead to charges being laid against two Toronto men. Police say that the student was at his 2nd Concession residence when he noticed a red Chrysler Voyager minivan drive by his home, back up to the drive- way and stop. A man got out of the van and approached a garage on the property, where he began looking at a riding lawn- mower, police say. The teen entered the garage, and the man asked him if the mower needed repairs. He offered to Woman demands thieves put back stolen haul take the mower away and fix it. The teen said his father just had the lawnmower repaired. The man returned to the van and drove off, police said. Suspicious of the visitor's activities, the teen alerted the police of the incident, giving a very detailed description of the van, the male and the license number. Two men caught in Metro Using the information given by the two Uxbridge residents, Durham Police were able to trace the van's ownership to a Toronto man who was later arrested by Metro Police in East York. Two men were returning home when they were pulled over by Metro Police, and the driver was found to be driving with a suspended license. The van was later impounded. Durham Police are investigating the two Toronto men in connection with the local incidents.
