It happened recently, when a young boy attending a ball game in Seagrave was mauled, and hurt badly. While most reactions to the story were of concern and compassion for the child, there was one letter, from a dog owner, chiding The Star for trying to "terrify the public" by holding forth certain breeds as dangerous. Nonsense. they're news. If certain breeds are connected more often than others with stories of this sort, their owners -- than the media. In other words, we wouldn't write stories portraying pit bulls as vicious if they didn't attack children and adults with such frequency. But observations by some folks -- that dogs prone to being aggravated by kids shouldn't be taken to parks and other places | where it's certain they'll encounter kids -- are right on the money. Everybody is entitled to keep dogs of 'whatever breed and temperment they choose. But with that entitlement comes a heavy responsibility. Most dog owners are diligent in observing their responsibilities. That's why stories of this sort don't appear all that often. That said, however, there will be times when dogs attack. Kids will be hurt. Questions will be raised about owner responsibility. It's the job of the newspaper, as a forum for community idea sharing, to talk about it. 50 YEARS AGO Thursday, August 27, 1942 Mr. H. R.
