hi lhl Sena As. TE, SM NRE Rr I IAT 4 ¥ a aT "A Family Tradition for 131 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, September 16, 1997 - 9 \ NR BR NL Helen Alves is hoping she can find some traces of a family history she's been compiling. The material, including birth, marriage and death certificates and letters dating to the 1800s, was in a binder that was stolen from her car recently. Hl Theft results in loss of research for family history By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star When a thief smashed a car window and stole a tote recently, he also made off with a large part of a family's history. Helen Alves of Port Perry parked her car along Durham Rd. 21 at the entrance of the regional forest in Uxbridge Township Sept. 3. When she returned from a walk in the woods, she found the window of her car smashed, and a briefcase and purse stolen. While it's irritating to have to replace the iden- tification and other items that were in her purse, Ms Alves is most concerned about the con- tents of the bag: It con- tained a binder which held the results of months of research into her family's history. It was a fluke the material was in the car at all, said Ms Alves, who works in the physiother- apy department at the hospital in Port Perry. "I don't usually carry my family history," she said. "But a couple mem- bers of my family wanted some of the information, so I was going to stop on the way home and make copies." The documents, which have been reproduced after trips to archives and through contacts with family members in various areas, have helped Ms Alves to piece together the early histo- ry of her family in Canada. She's learned for instance, of a great- great-uncle who was a participant in the Upper Canada rebellion of 1837, five years after he arrived from Scotland. He was eventually pardoned by the queen, but there was a condition attached: He was ban- ished from Canada. Ms Alves' great-great- grandfather left Canada for the United States until the aftermath of the rebellion blew over, and eventually returned to Canada. Among the material stolen were letters from a later period which were invaluable in helping to provide insight on the family's history here, she said. As well, birth, mar- riage and death records, upon which historians base much of their research, are gone. WIN They're not irreplace- able -- they were copies of original documents -- but it won't be easy to reassemble the collection of records, Ms Alves said. "It's just annoying," she said. "Really annoy- ing." Soon after the theft she heard from a woman near Ashburn, who had found some of her iden- tification in the vicinity of the Mt. Zion church. Ms Alves made a thor- ough search of the road- side and surrounding area but, unfortunately, found no trace of her research. "I've done about all I can do," she said.
