Over the last several years, the two Port Perry men and a Bowmanville resident have donated more than $10,000 each in articles and merchan- dise to the non-profit orga- nization, and Thursday night (Sept. 18), Ducks Unlimited said thanks. At a packed dinner meeting, Port's Earl Fletcher and John Mackey, along with Bowmanville's Pat Neal, were presented with the prestigious Bronze Teal award, signifying their contributions over the years. While none of the three would take a guess at the amount they have donat- ed over the years, they all agreed that they were giving back to the land, and Ducks Unlimited, a nation-wide organization whose aim to to protect and enhance wetlands and wildlife. "We're giving back to the wetlands, trying to help support them and the environment as well," said Mr. Fletcher, who has contributed more than $10,000 over the past 13 years. "We're trying to main- tain and support the wet- lands as well as help develop new ones. We want to help wildlife pros- per, but we've got lots of work to do," the Cartwright High School science teacher explained, adding that he's donated decoys and walking sticks over the years. The local chapter's annual dinner and auc- tion is its main fundraiser. Also contributing a variety of items to the organization over the past 12 years has been Pat Neal, a retired General Motors employee. "I'd like to support the development of the wet- lands. We've been filling them in for many years now, and most are recov- erable," he said. Port Perry Marina owner John Mackey has also donated more than $10,000 to the organiza- tion over the previous 11 years. "Ducks Unlimited gives a lot to us and we're trying to help support the development of the wet- lands. There are lots of local wetlands and other lands and habitats that need our attention, and we're trying to help," he said. "We're doing it for the waterfowl and other types of life." During his years with the organization Mr. Mackey has given a vari- ety of boat equipment; this year he contributed a Mariner aluminum boat, including a six- horsepower motor, valued at $1,200. Receiving recognition earlier this year was Wilson Patterson, who was presented with the Diamond Award for con- tributing $5,000 in cash over five years. In 1996 Ducks Unlimited Canada raised over $4 million, of which $3 million was used to conserve and restore wet- lands. replaces : PROPANE, WOE GAS OR O LE' YSown | 0 Hall 1873 302 Queen Street Port Perry, Ontario Presents...
