18- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, September 23, 1997 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Police to vote on latest offer From page 1 and we have adjourned the beginning of arbitration talks until our members can vote on this (tomor- row)," Mr. Curtis said. "There have been what we feel are some significant changes from the offer they (the police services board) offered in the contract we voted on last week." That offer was voted down by an overwhelming 91 per cent of the members who voted on it. Mr. Curtis said the voter turnout for the last contract offer was good: "We had a little over 50 per cent turnout; that's good for a vote like this." While declining to go into details, Mr. Curtis said "this is an offer we feel comfortable recom- mending to the members." Scugog Mayor Howard Hall, who sits on the police services board, said the region has made some con- cessions in attempting to hammer out an agreement Naturalists week Sept. "It's the same basic con- tract we offered them last time, but we have backed off a little on what we feel are several key points of contention," he said. "We feel this offer should be acceptable to the associa- tion." Association members interviewed by the Star over the past week say that obtaining pay equal with other police forces of simi- lar size in the province is a predominant issue for them. Mayor Hall said that goal has been achieved with this offer: "This con- tract will give them equity by the end of its course." Whether rank and file Association members agree will be decided when Association members vote Wednesday (Sept. 24).
