McClelland Port Perry Star Bill "Lefty" Harper was one of the purest hitters of a baseball ever to play the sport in Ontario. And the Port Perry senior has many awards and many fine mem- ories from those years when he made life absolutely miserable for opposing pitchers. Ore2 of Lefty's more memorable moments at the plate came at old Exhibition Stadium on Toronto's lakefront, 55 years ago this week. Beyond the fence in right field, high in the air, some 375 feet from home plate, was a Tip Top Tailor sign advertising mens' suits. And any batter who hit the sign with a home run won himself a free suit from Tip Top. On Sept. 22, 1942, when Lefty was playing in the Congress tour- nament for the Mahar Shoes team, he hit that Tip Top sign--not once, but three times in one game. After the game (won by Lefty's team, which also went on to win the tournament) Lefty went to the scorekeeper to ask him to verify the feat, so he could get down to Tip Top's the next day and pick out his three new suits. "I can't do that," said the score- keeper. "Why not?" Lefty replied. "I hit the sign three times. You saw it, everyone in the park saw it." "Yes, but nobody would ever believe it," replied the scorekeeper. He agreed to confirm that Lefty had nailed the sign once. The next day Lefty went over to a Tip Top store on the Lakeshore to get himself a new suit. "They offered me one at $39.95 that looked like it had been worn by a sheep," Lefty recalls with a chuckle. He eventually paid $10 and walked out of the store with a better quality suit that had a $49.95 price tag on it. Lefty can't recall who the oppos- ing team was the day he hit the Tip Top sign three times. But he cracked his homers off two different pitchers, whose names also escape him 55 years later. But he certainly remembers the name of one pitcher he came up against during his outstanding baseball career. "Only guy who ever struck me - the out three times in one game. I never even got a look at the ball," Lefty says of a young up and coming fire- baller by the name of Sal Maglie.
